For as long as he can remember, high school student Ichigo Kurosaki has been able to see the spirits of the dead, but that has not stopped him from leading an ordinary life. One day, Ichigo returns home to find an intruder in his room who introduces herself as Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper tasked with helping souls pass over. Suddenly, the two are jolted from their conversation when a Hollow—an evil spirit known for consuming souls—attacks. As Ichigo makes a brash attempt to stop the Hollow, Rukia steps in and shields him from a counterattack. Injured and unable to keep fighting, Rukia suggests a risky plan—transfer half of her Soul Reaper powers to Ichigo. He accepts and, to Rukia's surprise, ends up absorbing her powers entirely, allowing him to easily dispatch the Hollow.

Now a Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo must take up Rukia's duties of exterminating Hollows and protecting spirits, both living and dead. Along with his friends Orihime Inoue and Yasutora Sado—who later discover spiritual abilities of their own—Ichigo soon learns that the consequences of becoming a Soul Reaper and dealing with the world of spirits are far greater than he ever imagined.

Bleach has sold over 130 million copies worldwide as of 2022, making it one of the top 20 best-selling manga series of all time; North American sales have also been significant with 1.7 million copies sold in the region. In 2005, the series won the 50th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shounen category.

The series was published in English by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump imprint from July 6, 2004, to October 2, 2018, and as omnibus volumes from June 7, 2011, to March 5, 2019; a hardcover collector's edition for volume one was released by VIZ Media on August 5, 2008, a box set of volumes 1-21 was released on September 16, 2008, as well as volumes 22-48 on July 7, 2015, and the final box set containing volumes 49-74 on November 6, 2018. It has also been published in Brazilian Portuguese by Panini Comics since July 2007, and in Spanish by Glénat since June 2006, publishing 51 volumes before the publisher went defunct; it was later republished by Panini Comics from February 2013 to November 2017.

Many adaptations have also been made of Bleach, with four feature-length films, numerous video games, spin-off light novels, databooks, a live-action movie, and even a musical.

One of the greatest qualities of Bleach lies in the way Tite Kubo manages to align the drama of his characters with the very visual construction of the work. Their conflicts are not confined to dialogue or psychology: they frequently find a correspondence in settings, bodies, clothing, weapons, powers, and other physical elements. In the Soul Society arc, for example, the institution’s hierarchical and traditional structure becomes part of Ichigo and Rukia’s conflict, while Byakuya embodies, through his position and actions, the opposition between duty and personal attachment. In the Arrancar arc, this relationship becomes even more evident: emptiness, loneliness, fragmented identity, and the relationship ... between humanity and monstrosity are incorporated into the characters themselves and their transformations. Ichigo’s Hollow mask is not merely a combat tool, just as Ulquiorra’s characterization is not merely aesthetic. Visual form participates in the drama.

It is precisely this integration that allows Bleach’s best battles to serve a function that goes beyond action. A fight can make visible a conflict that already existed between the characters. Space, objects, and bodies cease to be decoration and become extensions of the drama. The problem with the work emerges when its expansion causes this relationship to become increasingly less organic. Many characters continue to receive personal conflicts, backstories, motivations, and dramatic moments, but they are increasingly introduced within a structure whose practical priority is to place them in combat. The flashback attempts to give that character depth, the power attempts to express their identity, and the battle attempts to provide their resolution, but what is often missing is what existed in the earlier arcs: enough time for the drama to develop in the present and transform the narrative itself.

The Thousand-Year Blood War makes this contradiction particularly evident. Bleach does not abandon its ambition to dramatize its characters. On the contrary, it continues trying to give emotional meaning to deaths, sacrifices, relationships, and characters’ pasts. The problem is that the structure reveals a different priority. The battles occupy so much space and demand such a constant escalation of powers that the dramatic elements begin to exist within the fights, rather than the fights naturally emerging from them. Settings, which previously helped express the condition of characters and institutions, often become arenas for confrontations; powers remain visually connected to the characters’ identities, but their primary function becomes differentiating and escalating the battles. Thus, the work still wants us to care about the people who are fighting, but its structure rarely allows us to spend enough time with them for the drama to carry the same weight.

That is why, for me, the problem with Bleach in TYBW is not simply that it has turned into an ordinary “battle shounen.” Kubo never completely abandons his intention to build characters and give their battles meaning. What is lost is the unity between dramaturgy and visual form that once made this intention so powerful. Before, character, conflict, setting, object, transformation, and battle seemed like parts of the same idea of staging. In TYBW, these elements still exist, but they no longer articulate with the same sense of necessity: the character still has a drama, the power still has an aesthetic, and the fight still has an emotional justification, but it is the battle that organizes the whole. Bleach continues to want to dramatize its characters even when its own structure demonstrates that what really needs to happen is the next fight. And it is precisely in this distance between what the work wants us to feel and what its form gives us enough time and space to feel that one of its greatest weaknesses lies.

Uma das maiores qualidades de Bleach está na maneira como Tite Kubo consegue alinhar o drama de seus personagens à própria construção visual da obra. Seus conflitos não ficam restritos ao diálogo ou à psicologia: eles frequentemente encontram correspondência em cenários, corpos, roupas, armas, poderes e outros elementos físicos. O flashback tenta conferir profundidade àquele personagem, o poder tenta expressar sua identidade e a batalha tenta produzir sua resolução, mas frequentemente falta aquilo que existia nos primeiros arcos: tempo para que o drama se desenvolva no presente e transforme a própria narrativa.
A guerra dos mil anos torna essa contradição especialmente evidente. Bleach não abandona sua ambição de dramatizar personagens. Pelo contrário, continua tentando atribuir significado emocional às mortes, aos sacrifícios, às relações e aos passados dos personagens. O problema é que a estrutura demonstra outra prioridade. As batalhas ocupam tanto espaço e exigem uma escalada tão constante de poderes que os elementos dramáticos passam a existir dentro delas, em vez de as batalhas nascerem naturalmente deles. Antes, personagem, conflito, cenário, objeto, transformação e batalha pareciam partes de uma mesma ideia de encenação. No TYBW, esses elementos continuam existindo, mas já não se articulam com a mesma necessidade: o personagem ainda possui um drama, o poder ainda possui uma estética e a luta ainda possui uma justificativa emocional, porém é a batalha que organiza o conjunto. Bleach continua querendo dramatizar seus personagens mesmo quando sua própria estrutura demonstra que o que realmente precisa acontecer é a próxima luta. E é justamente nessa distância entre aquilo que a obra quer que sintamos e aquilo que sua forma nos dá tempo e espaço para sentir que está uma de suas maiores fragilidades.

Mixed Feelings

Bleach, one of the Big Three. Being part of them, it has a fairly well-adapted and faithful anime, which begs the question of whether it's actually worth reading the manga if you've already watched the show...

Story: 7.5
An obvious advantage the manga has over the anime is skipping the filler. In my unbiased opinion, having watched the anime first and knowing the power levels the main characters eventually reach, reading it from the very beginning felt quite slow. To avoid dropping the manga, I skipped two arcs ahead just to make it a bit more interesting for myself.

Bleach's story is interesting because as the plot moves ... forward, its universe expands right alongside it, broadening the scope of things involved in the narrative. Maybe not so much in terms of architecture or cities, but more from a "cultural" standpoint regarding the different races.

Characters: 8
One thing I really liked about Bleach is that there isn't a single character I disliked. The main group of humans and the Shinigami are the only ones who feel genuinely "good" in the sense that they aren't evil. As for the Captains, even though several of them fight alongside Ichigo, it feels like they are fighting for their Shinigami faction rather than for humanity. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just how I perceived it.

Similarly, the villains are quite interesting, to the point where several of them are actually very likable. It makes you think they are only "bad guys" due to the mere circumstances of the story and therefore must die, but because they are so well-defined, you end up growing quite fond of them.

Regarding the manga's art, I have two points:

One of the reasons it's worth reading the manga, even if you've seen the anime, is the mangaka's art style—especially his use of heavy blacks. The overall drawing quality is really good, making the reading experience highly enjoyable.

The character design is fantastic. Having every faction wear a standard uniform while still allowing each character to give it their own unique flair is brilliant. But it doesn't stop at fantastic clothing design; the weapon and power designs are also amazing. The way they are drawn is just another stroke of genius.

Overall: 8
The story of Bleach, both in the manga and anime, is quite gripping and interesting. The faction dynamic really hooks the reader, especially in a shonen manga, and if you add the fantastic character and weapon designs, you get a fantastic story.

But... here comes my debate: why read the manga if you have a great, if not better, adaptation in the anime? Due to health issues, the mangaka rushed his work on the final chapters, but now he gets to direct the new anime with much more freedom and expand on what he couldn't include in the manga.

My sincere recommendation: read the manga up to where the first anime adaptation ends. This mainly helps you avoid all the filler. After that, honestly, drop the manga and watch the new anime seasons. They have great animation and represent the true vision the mangaka wanted to deliver.

Ah Bleach, the most middling of the big three. What can be said about Bleach that hasn't already been said? It's dragged out, repetitive, kind of a rip off of Yu Yu Hakusho, has a bland magic magic system, and Ichigo isn't what most writers would call a compelling character.
So what does it have going for it? It's cool factor? I was a teenager when Bleach was coming out, and managed to miss it at the time, so I don't have any nostalgia for its particular style, but my girlfriend watched it as it was broadcasting, and she just cringes whenever she sees the character ...
