Absolutely unreal episode once again, with an insane ass cliffhanger there. This show is firmly rooting itself as a very strong Anime of the Year contender for me, the last few weeks have been an unbelievably fun and thrilling watch. Things felt kind of goofy and peaceful to start off with as Fujita kept on trying to have his friend Ebisu healed and getting rejected, especially by Kikurage early on as their priorities and minds are elsewhere, until Kikurage healed Ebisu halfway due to remembering that she was the one to offer Kikurage snacks. The cursed hairpin that has her eternally happy and laughing was accidentally left in her body during procedure, so Ebisu is just tripped up and laughing the whole time. Very much an Ebisu-like scenario there. Fujita's a good friend though, he was committed the whole time for his friend/partner to see them alive again.

Nikaido is rotting due to the events of the previous episode and still refusing to use her magic for En, and continuing to reject any use of the contract (the effects were weak with the contract as she still remembered Caiman and spoke about him normally than just looking like a mindless zombie). Kawajiri/Asu did manage to take her out and with him bringing Aikawa (who wrapped him up to cover up his skinless body), Nikaido was desperate to see if Aikawa was Caiman. That part is still ominous but she managed to see his face, and she is determined to go with Asu to truly find Caiman before the removal of her special 'drip' caused her to be affected by En's magic from before and turn to a mushroom. The stuff with Dokuga and just doing whatever he can to get healing smoke by taking some bodies was dope too after what happened with En handling all of them before.

But the highlight of the episode was around En and his panic towards the Cross-Eye Boss. He was suffering this week, feeling sick to his stomach about how ominous the status of the Boss was, being more desperate than ever to rely on Nikaido's magic rather than just letting her use it as a proper partner with consent like in the past. The anime really sold his paranoia superbly with the angles and shots used, as well as the music to heighten the intensity of what he is experiencing. With this, and Chota getting the fortune hinting that issues might be resolved but the overall fortune is bad, that served as a hint of things to come. And when he confronted the Cross-Eye Boss, that scene was fucking amazing and enthralling. It was dark, it was brutal, it was intense and nerve-wrecking. It epitomized Dorohedoro really well, and sold the horror of what the Cross-Eye Boss was as a threat. En effortlessly has dealt with so many people in the show so far in a direct confrontation, but that boss absolutely wrecked him, cut him in half without him being able to use the smoke and ultimately, took his life. Chota did get healed from the mushroom curse, and Fujita saw his corpse being taken by the boss. It was absolutely brutal stuff right there, and the direction of it looked great. The whole episode really sold the theme of 'desperation' so well.

This show is such a wild ride, and I'm enjoying every single second of it. This truly is some AOTY-level content, and with 4 episodes to go, it sucks to see this end so soon. Hope season 3 is in the works.

that En! cry at the end of "this is Dorohedoro" guy is exacly my feelings. He might have been a mafia boss and turned countless people to shrooms and even ate some, but for some reason I love him. Will be witing for his strong return.
Ebisu getting stuck with laughing pin is hilarious. Even when she regained her memories shes still stuck as a comic relief lol

In a world weird enough that a dog has a power to revive, but it's somehow make a compelling story, blood everywhere but you can't take your eyes off the screen. This is what it means to be Dorohedoro!

This show is always on the verge of turning into complete chaos. But I still do not know if I should root for Caiman ( or whoever he is now that the reptile form is gone). It's always like I bought the WRONG kind of mushrooms at the store & gone on an insane trip. LOL

So this ep only cuts the scene of the Cross Eye killing the Magic users in the Rave from the manga
Like the Actual action sequence since the scene cuts to the fall out

Just recently started reading the manga few days ago but still seeing these parts animated is amazing! Definitely love that ”sayonara” scene of Aikawa/Caiman and Nikaido and that ending of En's beheading....damn, just 4 more episodes!?!?

Damn, this show is so good. Always so many things going on at once. Ebisu is pretty much a permanent joke at this point. So if she is the one who cast magic on Caiman and her death is the reason his head became normal again I wonder why she cast it in the first place. And for the second time since she said it was the last time she saw him Nikaido sees Caiman again. So did he heal himself with those band aids? If those can fix En's mushrooms how isn't Noi's smoke fixing Nikaido? Damn Caiman didn't pull any punches this time. Did not expect to see En get owned so hard. So wait does that mean he IS the cross eyes leader, still confused about that. If the middle of the show is this good, can't imagine how good the end will be.

Last week I mentioned that the Boss’s return could cause things to escalate quickly and I anticipated En might be finished but I didn’t expect it to happen quite this fast. I like him as a character, but since he has fulfilled his narrative role I doubt he’ll be coming back, at least for a while.

In my eyes, the story is now building toward one of two potential conflicts: either a high-stakes, chaotic clash between the core structure of the magic world and the Boss-led Cross-Eyes, or a more personal journey for Aikawa/Caiman. This latter path would focus on him reclaiming his identity and unraveling the mystery of "the Boss" as his primary antagonist. Ultimately, the story's direction depends on whether the Boss is a curse (similar to Risu’s), a split personality of Aikawa/Caiman, or something else entirely.

On that note, the Curse only seemed to recognize and locate him once Aikawa’s headaches returned and the Boss emerged. Furthermore, given the distinct character designs -like Aikawa’s fluffy eyebrows compared to the Boss- and the mystery of how the crosses form around his eyes, it feels like there’s something deeper at play. I doubt these are just stylistic choices to exaggerate the transformation, though I can’t quite connect the dots yet.

Finally, building on my theory from last week regarding the location at the end of the episode and the nature of Aikawa’s powers, I want to add a few more things after this episode. I believe the transformation process works as follows: a specific trigger sets it off, Aikawa suffers an intense headache, he decapitates himself, and the Boss emerges. I had a hunch this was the case, but Fujita spotting a headless man in Aikawa’s clothes moments before the Boss appeared essentially confirms it for me. However, I’m still unsure if this works both ways or if Aikawa has any conscious control over it at all.

As for the Boss’s powers, I suspect he is literally warping/distorting reality within his vicinity, perhaps even creating a pocket dimension around himself. This powers likely comes from his jump into the lake in Hole and him "becoming one" with it. He has essentially become the physical manifestation of the distortion caused by accumulated magic, which is exactly what Hole is. And that's why I expect increasingly powerful magical beings, such as Devils, to become involved with him. It fits the narrative perfectly if the mangaka wants to go there: a clash between magic and its own warped and looked down byproduct.

I believe the hard part is over and after a few more steps I'll be able to roughly piece the whole puzzle together, if nothing throws me off that is. Let's wait and see.

It's masterful how something as intense as the buildup to En vs. the Cross Boss can still get injected with stuff like Chota Mary Poppins-ing away through his headshroom so seamlessly. Dumb little scene had me giggling like Ebisu over an otherwise grim fight.

Hearing Caiman's lizardhead voice unchanged for the "what we learned" sections was comfort food for the soul.

Holy fucking Shit. My goodness.

The episode started all goofy and funny as Fujita kept looking for Kikurage and chasing her all the time for her to revive Ebisu but didn't succeed until she herself revived Ebisu. Kikurage is so adorable. I love her so much.

But, my goodness... this shit went so fucking dark in an instant. It kept building up and the final blow was so fucking terrifying. En is gone just like that. He didn't even get to do anything. Caiman calls himself Aikawa now and Nikaido and his last moment was sweet but sad. A sad goodbye. Nikaido is in trouble as well. Kawajiri is by her side tho.

That cliffhanger tho... So fucking good. This shit is so fucking raw.

Every episode results in more questions. I finally want to get some closure and have some firm answers. No way am I going to accept En is dead though. Aikawa's memory loss must also be temporary (headaches?). Unless Caiman was a completly seperate person? We dealt with the consquences of 2 dead wizards in just one episode and now I truly blieve that Ebisu had sth. to do with the creation of Caiman. Ahhh, it is just so convoluted!

Devils being able to demoted to be wizards again is rough. Poor Asu. I guess there just are "true" devils and the new devils just do the dirty and boring work for them.

My favourite part of the episode were the first 8 min of Ebisu being dragged along. A comedy stick as good as a "Dinner for one"

So when En died, does that mean the contract between him and Nikaido is gone? So she can move around freely.
And Risus curse is going after Aikawa, so Aikawa seems to be the boss of the cross-eyes and the killer of Risu. No idea why he killed Risu though. Maybe Ebisu knows more, she seems to have trapped the curse in Aikawa, as it came back to Risu, after Ebisu died and Caiman became Aikawa. I think this means Ebisu should have been around that time. I wonder if the Amnesia and headaches are a sideeffekt of Ebisus magic or of Risus curse. Poor Ebisu, she has tough luck and became crazy again. If Aikawa succeeds in taking Ens head home, En is gone for good, but maybe Fujita will be a hero and save En.
Don't mind me, just vibing here ^_^

Amazing ep

Now Nikaido a cyborg, huh?

Caiman the person is no more...

Lol, Fujita really cares abt Ebisu, despite her dead appearance.

Good lord, Noi accidentally killed Ebisu. Nvm, she regenerated her.

Kikurage is such a funny creature.

Now Ebisu is finally back.

Dat boi En scared asl.

Knew Chota's horny ass would love that mushroom on his face.

Looks like Ebisu's a crackhead now 🤣

Damn, Dokuga got busy rq. He must of been the Cross Eyes boss's right hand man or sum with the way that he treasures that knife.

Yup, Caiman is now "Aikawa".

En really HATES the Cross Eyes boss.

Aikawa not slick with his way of speaking. Nikaido is on to that.

Damn, that might be the last time that Nikaido sees Aikawa/Caiman...

Gotta feel bad for Nikaido fr.

Kinda surprised that En didn't just use Chota as a shield to protect himself.

NAH, AIKAWA A REAL DEMON.

Perhaps his magic is warping reality, but damn that speed blitz was insane 😤

En is actually dead, wow. Looks like Aikawa wanted to finish their fight from 6 years as well.

10/10

Was expecting En to die after he "ended" Caiman. It felt cathartic, but if this show, especially this episode proved anything, deaths are impermanent af. I do hope En stays out for the rest of the season at least.

Maybe it's just the CR subs, but they're inconsistent on Kikurage's dialogue, which I can glean 50% or so from basic Japanese, but I don't know the basic kanji enough to easily read everything. Also even the first segment title is untranslated, which makes me think the Netflix version might be more thorough.

Damn, so En died just like that huh, he seemed unkillable because of how strong his mushroom powers are but I guess those dreams telegraphed that he might be meeting his end soon, I just didn’t think it would be this very episode. Well this is the same episode that Ebisu got revived in, so I don’t doubt that En may come back eventually, but it is still such a wild thing to witness, and even tho he really is a bastard that’s done a lot of bad things, I’m kinda sad he got done this way lol, he’s such a fun character after all, he and his family are always a good time, so for that reason, I hope this isn’t a final death for him.

But wow man, Aikawa is a dangerous mf, I’m still not sure if he and Caiman are separate existences or not but it did seem like he was intentionally avoiding Nikaido, so I think they may be one and the same after all. And oh yeah, the plot stuff was so crazy that it almost overshadowed the Kikurage stuff lol, yeah that bit was really funny, I loved Fujita’s reactions to Ebisu’s body getting worse and worse, Noi healing Ebisu with the hairpin in her brain especially got me, and because of said hairpin, Ebisu kinda reverted to how she was before she got her memories back, welcome back goofy ass Ebisu lol.

The Chota scene where he realizes En had died was adapted so fucking well man. One of my favorite moments. Nice work by the VA.

The event adapted in this episode was such a massive wtf moment for me in the manga because at the beginning En is kind of presented as being an asshole feeling kind of evil at times but over the next several chapters it starts getting easy to like him while still liking Caiman, but then the events shown in this episode happen and he's fucking murdered and The Boss is evil as fuck so... It was a jarring twist.

It's like this season is competing to be the highest tier cliffhanger per episode anime there ever was. Aikawa was definitely ready for En this time, if that's even who that guy is. En was right that he needed someone broken like Nikaidou just to stand a chance. Another thing I like about this story is death doesn't have to be the end, but life still isn't cheap. A lot of people died this episode and only a few are gonna make it back.

It's probably for the best that Noi and her partner were off the premises when Aikawa showed up to do his thing or they would have been mincemeat as well. Just like last weeks episode, I have no idea what's going to happen next, but I'm excited to see episode 8.

This one makes the craziest tone shift: starting with comedic skits about Fujita's attempts to revive Ebisu, teleporting into an emotional reunion between Caiman/Aikawa & Nikaido, ending with the ultraviolent killing of En. I didn't notice any significant page skips, but the anime pacing feels much faster than in the manga. Visually and sonically, the show keeps nailing the bizarre nature of the magical world. Was that Aikawa who killed En? Looks can be deceiving. They won't reveal all the cards this season, but we should get more lore before the inevitable clash between Cross-eyes and En's "cleaners".
