Mars Daybreak is a pirate/mecha anime with a light breezy tone. More akin to older mecha like Heavy Metal L-Gaim, the show is filled with quirky, silly characters that go on many episodic adventures. While there is a main plot that outlines these stories, it never gets too heavy. It is one of studio Bones more obscure titles. The show seems to be overshadowed by a more popular show many of its’ staff would later go on to produce-Eureka Seven. I remember being a little let down by the show when I first saw it in my 20’s. The pacing/plot takes a backseat to character interactions and it rubbed against my expectations for high-stakes action. After watching more samurai movies and film in general, I have a better appreciation for what it is doing. Samurai Champloo at its’ core functions as a combination of chambara and road movies with the easygoing vibe of hangout pictures. The final installment in Takeshi Koike’s Lupin OVA/ONA/ movie spin-off series ends on an odd note. Throughout these anniversary installments it is revealed that a shadowy figure manipulated events and sent multiple assassins after Lupin and his crew. Preceeding chapters provided gritty action and characterization closer to the manga counterparts. For the final movie part, Koike and screenwriter Yuya Takahashi deliver a violent, disjointed story that taps into a supernatural, weird science vein.
Shortly after his hideout and loot are set aflame, Lupin, Goemon, Fujiko and Inspector Zenigata travel to a remote island to unravel the recent series of events ...

What starts as a interesting detective mystery descends into a dull slog. Characters engage in large expositional dumps and talk at one another explicitly about the themes. Naoki Urasawa is a fussy mangaka who publicly endorsed the adaptation and had some oversight in the adaptation. This contributes to a slavish adaptation that diminishes the strengths of the medium. The director and staff either hold too much reverence for the manga or were not permitted to make necessary choices to streamline and adapt for tv length episodes. Instead episodes are mostly bloated 45min to 1 hour parts that mostly use the manga as a strict storyboard.

I’m pleased to see the new adaptation has a lot of what makes the franchise so great. It feels a bit uninspired to go back to the source material and market this iteration as “manga faithful,” but in exchange we get a lot of what makes the manga unique. Gone is the stoic characterization of the Major and sad Batou from SAC. Here we get a little gremlin Kusanagi that is as silly as she is badass. For a anime that is advertised as an edgy shonen show, it refuses to kill major characters. There is plenty of violent death but it is mostly ancillary characters that are given little or no developement. It is both very violent and toothless with character deaths. Fights end up lacking tension because no one of importance is in real danger. While the animation and direction can be striking in particular scenes, it fails to be consistent in either. The idea of a predator removing a woman’s brain and placing it into a indestructable robot version of her 14 year old self is terrifying. It’s a shame that the premise is used more for exploitative sexualization than trying to say something. Having seen Kite and Mezzo Forte, this should come as no surprise. When the director isn’t leering, Umetsu delivers visually-arresting action spectacle.
Smoke effects, explosions and gunfights are lovingly animated with a degree of detail and attention to choreography rarely seen in current anime productions. It’s hard to reccomend Virgin Punk to a casual anime fan. However, if viewers can stomach the ...

Often compared to other dark-fantasy anime like Berserk, it contains superficial similarities but none of the substance. On the surface, there is a feudal European setting and both series concern the exploits of stoic mercenaries who fight demons. Sadly, Claymore carries none of the interesting political maneuvering or the complicated relationship dynamics informed by trauma. Instead, it decides to focus on a more straightforward plot-structure concerning a half-human/demon heroine who must rise to the challenge to fight increasingly stronger monsters and control her demonic impulses.
