You could argue it has some deep moments, but if we're being honest: does it really? Yes, it does adress poverty, addiction and other social issues and the characters aren't completely one-dimensional. But beyond that, it's really all flat slice of life stuff.
Now, I don't hate slice of life and it definitely had some entertaining moments. The humor isn't bad, but it's also not the best. There are some interesting absurdist scenes, but I wouldn't exactly call those the cream of the crop either.

Is it romantic? Maybe a little bit, not really.
Is it funny? Maybe a little bit, but not really. Is it mildly entertaining? I guess so. I definitely don't hate this anime, overall it's really well made! However, I seriously don't know what the target audience is. Even if you have a huge maid and age-gap fetish, I don't think this anime has particularly much to offer. It's also not funny nor entertaining enough for slice of life fans and the story itsself it definitely not interesting enough to carry either. Overall, it was good enough for me to watch the 11 episodes, but I wouldn't particularly captivating.

Let's be real: The story is extraordinarily cheap, the artstyle is gay and the entire anime really just exists to live out a specific female fantasy.
That being said, it is pretty good at achieving that goal. And I'd rather have an anime designed for a specific target audience, than an anime that tries to please everyone. The overall pacing was good too! Production not so much. And to everyone saying the age-gap is unnecessary: Not only is the entire anime built around that age-gap (so it's not just something they could have left out), but it's also literally the only thing that adds a tiny bit ...

This anime could have easily been a 9/10. It's more in the atmospheric side, it's immersive and handels a controversial topic in a mature way. The artstyle is above average too!
The reason I didn't like it THAT much after all is, that it focusses way to little on the romance. There are like 5 side-plots about childhood friends, literature, making promises and similar generic stuff that I honestly couldn't care less about. It's not badly executed by any means, it's just not what I wanted. If you're looking for a captivating, sad, ugly, emotional, or really any kind of meaningful love story, you'll probably be dissapointed. ...

It really could've been worse, but the story was flat af. I was hoping for more tension, maybe people not approving their relationship, or some actual tension about Minas character or how she views MC.
Instead, what I got was a pretty empty "everyone's happy" slice of life story. Everyone approves of them with no resistance, there is zero tension, even Minas emotions are, despite the animes name, not questioned at all. Tbf, there is actually a tiny bit of tension about something to do with Minas backstory. But when I say "tiny", I really mean it, since the plot is really just "Hmm, I have some ...

This is definitely one of the best "hard logic" - animes I've seens so far. What I mean is that, contrary to other animes, the MC is never able to win by just screaming the loudest or by finding some abstract emotional key within without further explanation.
It's the opposite: He has to actually fight his way through by finding a loophole or a strategy within the rules, rather than by getting a sudden new power. If you get enjoyment out of these kind of stories, you'll definitely like Kaiji! One thing that might dissapoint some people though is, that the entire framework around those games is ...

Yes, the MC is miserable, but that's the entire point. It's not supposed to be a whimsical romance story, it's supposed to be a sad mature controversial one.
I mainly like this anime because the characters are really well written and it gets the mood across really well! Characters also aren't one-dimensional or over-sexualized like in many other animes. If you're one of those people who need the MC to be perfect and never make mistakes, you probably won't like it though, he definitely has flaws. Overall it just somehow got to me, which is why I rate it 10/10. The ending is good too. |
