There probably is some really good commentary on addiction, poverty and oppression in this series, buried not too deep under the disgusting jokes. Unfortunately to get to that commentary you will have to be cool with watching catgirls shit and piss themselves. This is one of those series that isn't *missing* anything, all the elements of a great slice of life series are there, but it's the things that need to be *taken away* that push it into basically unwatchable territory (unless catgirls having diarrhea and pissing their pants sounds like a great time to you, I'm not here to judge).

Since Utsumi left, the franchise has not been worth watching. They are milking a cash cow without a single iota of understanding of what made the series successful or what the fans liked about it. Everything that it has going for it now comes down to sound and visuals, and even though the animation continues to be impressive it isn't enough to make this season worth suffering through.
