Scum of the Brave is by the same original author as Sentenced to be a Hero, Rocket Shoukai. Sentenced to be a Hero was a pretty popular anime earlier this year, and I loved it a lot too, so when I first learned about that, I became pretty hyped about this one. was okay. It’s overall not as serious of a story until towards the end. It takes place in a world that looks mostly like modern Japan and follows Yashiro, a Brave, who are warriors that fight against the demon lords. He saves a young girl named Aki Jougamine in episode 1, who’s an aspiring Brave. A little while later he meets Aki’s friend, Yukine Indou, and sometime after that he helps them save another of their friends, Saera Kashiwagi Pendragon. The three of them become his disciples, much to his chagrin. The majority of this series is a fairly fun popcorn anime. It has decent animation, lively characters personality wise, fun character interactions, and pretty entertaining fights, with unique anime abilities. It’s nothing special, but it was an enjoyable ride.
But towards the end of the series we get some backstory of Saera. She’s the daughter of Arthur Pendragon, the leader of an organization called Half Dragon, a mysterious, shadowy, underground organization that secretly instigates and manufactures conflicts between Demon Kings to keep Braves, which are superhuman bounty hunters, in high demand. Saera herself has wanted to be a Brave ever since she was a little girl, but her father, and also her mother, (who isn’t part of Half Dragon and also isn’t a Brave, but knows what her husband does), doesn’t want her doing such dangerous work, and to be fair she did seem to be struggling with increasing her skill at using her abilities. She might be my favorite of the girls, but Aki is close, mainly because she’s really cute and funny, and her determination is endearing. I also love Aki’s character design. I’m especially partial to the design of Aki’s eyes, it reminds me of Oshi no Ko which was known for several of the characters having unique shapes or designs in their eyes. I also enjoyed the deadpan nature of Yukine. All three of them bounce off of each other really well, and they had a lot of charm to this little series. Yashiro himself is also a fine main character, although I do think he’s often overshadowed by the girls that he mentors. None of the villains are that interesting besides OCCASIONALLY their designs. They have almost no personality whatsoever, and solely exist to be obstacles to overcome.

The first part of season 2 of Mission Yozakura Family is pretty much just more of the same for this series. It’s a fun popcorn anime but not much more beyond that. It starts with absolute god tier genius with a new character, Ai. We technically saw her briefly at the end of the first season, but she gets more screen time at the start of this season. of an impression beyond her character design which I loved. But in this season, particularly the first episode, not only does she became very likable and funny, but Ai, like I said, is adorable, funny, and wholesome, but also has a tragic backstory with the loss of her parents. Obviously we all know that Taiyou relates to this so he’s able to use this to connect with her emotionally, and it’s almost unbearably wholesome watching Taiyou and Mutsumi be parents to her, and it gets even better when we see Rin’s reaction to how quickly they’ve become like a real family. Unfortunately both of them aren’t seen as much after episode 1, especially with Ai, only showing up at a few select moments after that.
The main antagonist was also revealed this season, who is Momo Yozakura, the father of the Yozakura Family who was believed to be deceased before this. From what I can tell it seems like his motive is trying to “save” the Yozakura family through unsavory means. He wants to revive his dead wife from the dead, Rei Yozakura, and bring his family back together, but literally none of his children are okay with this plan, despite how much they loved their mother. And it makes sense as to why, because he’s shown to be quite twisted from his grief, keeping the literal beating heart of his wife in a jar. He expresses a distorted sense of love, willing to sacrifice anyone and manipulate his own children to rebuild his ideal family. He’s a fine villain I guess, but honestly the overarching plot isn’t the main reason why I enjoy this anime. In fact when the capital P Plot does kick in, I begin to zone out a bit. I watch this series for fun character interactions, entertaining fights, and its overall popcorn anime nature.

Mission Yozakura Family is one of those anime that doesn’t do anything particularly unique or original, and it’s not even the most phenomenally executed I’ve ever seen, but it executes the concept just well enough for me to mostly enjoy it from start to finish. It’s about a teenage boy named Taiyou Asano. His parents die at the start which makes it difficult for him to form emotional connections with others for fear that they might leave him too. into the series we learn that Mutsumi is from a family of assassins. Since Taiyou is close to Mutsumi he’s being targeted by people who want to kill her, so she tells him the truth about her family and they decide to protect him. Her family is very colorful. Mutsumi is the youngest, and she has a sister named Shion hwo’s a gamer and is debatably my favorite, Futaba who seems to be the head of the family, or at least the head of the sibings and is another one of my favorites, Kengo who’s also a gamer, Nanao who has a huge body but a super high pitched voice, Shinzou who honestly I don’t remember as much as the others, and then Kyouichirou whom I wasn’t the hugest fan of. He’s not terrible and he does have entertaining scenes, but his whole shtick is that he’s creepily obsessed with Mutsumi and the joke wears off pretty quickly I think.
This is one of the many anime that was formatted in the way where there’s several straight episodes that don’t seem to progress the plot directly and are for the sole purpose of giving us fun character interactions and fights, and then we might get an episode or two that actually does progress the plot, and that format repeats for the entire series. None of the characters are that deep or complex, but most of them are entertaining enough with appealing character designs to drag me through the story. Mutsumi and Taiyou are adorable, wholesome, and have good chemistry, even if their actual relationship can be a bit milquetoast at times. Like I said before though this anime in general is not incredible but it’s fun. It’s a popcorn anime at heart. This might seem like a strange comparison, but it kind of reminded me of Sakamoto Days at times. Now don’t get me wrong it’s not AS good as Sakamoto Days. But it revolves around a close knit family, having elements of both biological family and found family, and there’s lots of action, there’s spies and assassins, it does have similarities, even if they’re only scant, and like I said Sakamoto Days is way better than this one. But I still enjoyed it. The characters are cliché, but they have a lot of charm to them, the animation isn’t amazing but is good enough, the interactions between the family are usually wholesome and sometimes funny, and the fights are entertaining.

This one was actually pretty good. Not amazing, but I enjoyed it well enough. It has a great concept, and as good as the idea is, it was a bit disappointment, but for me to dislike it entirely. theme of this anime is how it’s important to live your own life, that it can be tough sometimes, but it’s important and will ultimately bring her happiness. And while I don’t think the execution was incredible, I still enjoyed it for the most part. We see the replica, Nao, interact with classmates, and fall in love with a boy named Shuuya Sanada. Their interactions are really cute and wholesome. The ending was kind of sad too, because it concludes with Suano and Nao fusing back together, which seems to end Nao’s relationship with Shuuya. The ending might imply that Sunao and Shuuya getting closer and thus may get together later, but I’m not entirely certain about that, it’s kind of vague. And that’s one of my few complaints with the series. Another issue I had was that the pacing was a bit fast. Not so much that I wasn’t able to like it, but it was slightly noticeable. But honestly I’ve been watching a lot of bad anime lately, so one that’s not great but is still enjoyable is a plus in my book. I also really enjoyed Suano’s and Nao’s relationship with each other. Even though they’re two sides of the same being, they kind of had a wholesome sisterly relationship a lot of the times, which is another reason why the ending was kind of sad.

I really wanted to like this one, but it just didn’t work for me. The only remotely interesting character is Eren Yamagishi, but I didn’t like her overall because of how overly melodramatic that she is. I know that might sound like a weird complaint at first glance because anime is kind of known for being melodramatic, but this just takes it way too far honestly. The way she acts is as if her parents were murdered and she’s seeking revenge, not a frustrated artist, which is what she actually is. And like I said, none of the other characters even attempt to be interesting.

I saw some reviews say that all of the characters are unlikable, but at first I would have only agreed with that with Eren. Again, not for traditional reasons, but because how over the top they take her makes it impossible for me to like her. But in the second half of the show, yeah, a LOT of characters are introduced that are profoundly unlikable, for no fucking reason. Having a cast of unlikable characters can work, but uh...let’s just say this series is no Game of Thrones. It’s not even budget Masamune-kun’s Revenge either. It’s something below even that designation. There’s also way too many timeskips throughout the anime. It makes it impossible for me to care about what’s going on when we only get a little bit in the present, almost no fleshing out of the characters or themes, then it cuts a head a year or more. Hell, there are times when we get multiple major timeskips in a single episode. The only somewhat unique or interesting thing about this anime is that the brooding, emo, asshole character is usually filled by a dude, in this case it’s a chick, but that’s a pretty minor change honestly.

This is another one of those anime that seems like it’s trying to capitalize on the enduring popularity of the Symphogear franchise. I think it’s kind of funny that I’ve seen several of the knockoffs but I have yet to actually watch Symphogear. And this one isn’t very good. Some reviews have called it terrible, but I don’t necessarily agree with that, it’s just boring. Episode 1 was kind of fun. While the characters aren’t that interesting, the animation was incredible and the fights intense. I was thinking it would end up being a pretty good popcorn anime, nothing incredible but a worthy time waster.

However the rest of the series never has anything that entertaining ever again. They seriously clickbaited me. I’m kind of angry about it actually, just a little bit. So I can’t even give it those accolades like I was hoping to. After that the only consistent good qualities that I can give to it is that the singing is fine, even if the songs themselves are a bit generic, and the series does still look mostly nice even if the animation never reaches the heights of episode 1 again. The thing is if this is someone’s first ever anime they’ll probably enjoy it, and I couldn’t even critique them for that. But it doesn’t do anything for someone like me who’s seen over 4,000 anime. The characters are cute and aren’t unlikable, but they’re not interesting. The animation and art is fine for the most part, but it never again reaches the heights of the first episode. The singing is fine but not great and even if it was that wouldn’t save the series for me obviously.

I’ve found one of the strangest titles in anime I’ve seen in awhile. And the show is just as strange. And not necessarily in a good way. So this anime isn’t terrible, it was just kind of dull and a bit too weird for me. It’s about a sentient penguin named Kujima who speaks Russian who befriends a high school boy named Arata Kouda. It’s largely a slice of life, almost Iyashikei, but I didn’t find it very soothing. Not because it’s stressful, just because it’s boring. hit or miss, Kujima is boring at best and gross at worse, and none of the characters were that interesting so I also couldn’t care about any of the few moments that tried to tug at our heartstrings.

This is one of the worst anime of the Spring 2026 anime season. It’s not offensively bad, it’s just nothing I haven’t seen before with absolutely no heart in the writing. It’s a fantasy story where the MC is overpowered and he fights monsters, he’s betrayed by his party, with a bit of Arifureta edginess in the way he becomes overpowered. This is one of those anime that isn’t incredible, but is enjoyable why you’re watching it. It follows a high school maid named Suzume Tachibana, although the fact that she is a maid is barely relevant. She wears a maid costume all the time, and she’s even called a maid a few times, but we never, or almost never, see her do any actual traditional maid work. It’s pretty much just a normal romantic comedy, emphasis on the comedy, anime where the protagonist happens to be wearing a maid outfit. Nana Komatsu and Ricotta Fresca are wholesome, and so is her budding romance with Sora Endou, although like I said previously the romance isn’t the main focus, not even close. It’s there, but this is an anime that you watch if you want to see something cute and wholesome, and maybe a tad funny or humorous at times. It wasn’t super emotional, it isn’t plot heavy, but it was a nice, almost iyashikei-ish watch that just made me feel good, and man I tell you, right now, I think we could all use that.

I was a bit surprised by this anime that I didn’t find it insanely boring. It’s a reverse harem, which means it’s not made for me a 32 year old straight man, but I still found myself strangely charmed by this little show. It’s not incredible, nowhere close to being a masterpiece, but I still thought it was somewhat enjoyable. It’s about Rinko Nakama, a huge fan of anime and manga as well as an aspiring manga author. whereas Haruma is loud and short tempered. Although both of them are capable of yelling at each other when they’re fighting over Rinko. On the surface this series isn’t that different from a typical reverse harem anime, but it’s not boring, that’s the point. It’s not great, but the characters are likable, there interactions are fun and fairly entertaining, and I’m overall glad that I watched it. The pretending to be your boyfriend trope, which Rinko did with Akito, is pretty overdone in romance in general, but it still wasn’t bad though.
