Did not expect a fantastic story to come out of this kind of bait.
Let’s be honest, the story takes the “girl failure” trope and visualises it with a beautiful woman. I usually drop stories like this, until I saw the bite the story had at the beginning. There’s an actual plot, an actual objective, and not just an excuse to bait the audience with the character design. The story made a point about improving your situation, and it psychologically informed why Gye is in the spot she’s in. is to change a bad mindset from the literal, unmovable root.
The very slow progression was something I loved seeing, specially when I was laughing my ass off to the antics of a terribly unsociable person being surrounded by weird people. She gets jobs, she quits them, she meets assholes, and her consistent personality manages to carry the story for the whole thing. She’s weirdly impulsive, an over-thinker, someone who tortures herself with her safety nets, but also someone who when put on the spot can ask to herself, why? Why am I like this? Why do I hate myself so much as to keep this going?
I adored how the story sometimes gets incredibly philosophical about daily life, about things we should be doing, and if there’s any meaning if not in passion. How can we live when passion isn’t growing out of us? If we get a chance and mess it up, how can we pick ourselves up from that? Maybe it’s because I’m entering my late 20s that a story like this hits like a truck. I imagine if you’re younger it might not do as much for someone, but beyond its eccentricities, the story says something true, something beautiful.
I also did not expect the story to become an incredibly well-crafted, leg kicking worthy romance story that earns it so perfectly. I was giggling like a highschooler watching a friend find love. The dates, and the total awkwardness of it, also the eventual sexuality that’s still explored in the tone of the story. The eventual moments of intimacy are some of the best I’ve read in fiction because of two thirds of entire buildup for it. I don’t think a romance storyline has hit like this one since in a long, long time.
However, the romance is adjacent to the style of the story. If you're not into the comedy, and its style from the get go, I can't really recommend it as a romance story. It's the story of Gye, and as such it's fantastic.
The final arcs are some of my favourites in any slice-of-life story. The story of her parents, their love, and their daughter’s current love. Within its simple antics, it touches a fiber, something I can’t grasp entirely. It feels like it manages to capture life, in its ugliness, sometimes its stupidity, but also how our efforts can make it something worth living. Some people are angry that she solves her problems too fast at the end, but I don’t know, I loved seeing her manage it after the stupidest time of her life. Her overthinking, and her mental jail was exactly what kept her in that situation. Having someone that reminds you to be the best version of yourself is sometimes a toxic idea, but sometimes it’s exactly what you need to bring who you are to fruition.
9.5/10. I think this is close to perfect. One of my favourite slice-of-life, turned romance stories of all time.
