Synopsis

Within the safety of the walls, youths are raised in a nursery-style setting by robots. While life there may appear stale on the surface, the children are full of potential and curiosity. In many ways it is like a slice of heaven. The outside world is a hell-scape. It is almost entirely void of anything mechanical and is now inhabited by bizarre, yet powerful super-natural beings.

Maru, with the aid of Kiruko, is out there crisscrossing what was once Tokyo for heaven. But after searching for so long, maybe heaven is more of an untenable dream than a potential reality.

Tengoku Daimakyou ranked first in the 2019 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! for the Male Readers division.

The series has been published in English as Heavenly Delusion by Denpa since December 31, 2019. The series has also been simulpub through K Manga. It has also been released in Polish by Waneko since March 9, 2024.

When I watched the anime it completely threw me in for a loop with the last scene. The moment we realize it's two different timelines of the same world - that's when I knew this anime will be a meticulously planned and intricate story.

The world building and foreshadowing are supreme and used subtly throughout the whole series, which I think is the strongest point and what drew me in. The characters are not stereotypical and each have strong complexities about themselves and how they interact with the world and people around them. Mixed Feelings

As the story draws into the final arc, I feel now is a good time to collect my thoughts on everything I've read so far. I focus mostly on the plot, so to quickly cover the rest: the art is nice, high quality and detailed. The writing is smooth and the pacing of dialogue and exposition is also very smooth.

Context on the plot: Two parallel timelines are explored as the world experiences an Apocalypse. In one, we follow a group of genetically modified children and the cult-like organization that bred them as they prepare for a "heaven on Earth" with them as the rulers. ... Their plan fails. In the other, we follow the two primary MCs who live their lives mostly post-apocalypse as they try to figure out why the world is the way it is and go on a journey to, maybe, fix it.

TD/Heavenly Delusion has many mysteries and plot twists. So far, there are several unanswered questions and characters who still need resolving, so there's only so much I can say about how those are playing out besides I like it and haven't had any visceral reactions to anything yet. I'm a little concerned if there's enough time to explore everything, though, as you're well aware of where each timeline is converging to, so there's a time clock you can feel as you read each chapter. On that, I can say that the pacing isn't the best - many characters' story lines are glossed over quickly, while others get much more attention. This is problematic due to the way the world of TD works - all pre-apocalypse characters are inherently interesting since they all play some part in what eventually happens to the world.

Adding to that, because the pacing is poor, it's very easy to completely forget certain characters exist or what their motivations were and how it ties into revelations dozens of chapters later. I imagine if you're binging this manga, it won't be as bad of a problem as it is with the monthly release schedule we're subjected to right now.

There are a lot of arcs split across the pre- and post-apocalypse timelines, and it certainly feels like the filler is heavily concentrated on the post-apocalypse side. This makes the pre-apocalypse story feel more engaging to read and makes the post-apocalypse-focused chapters feel sluggish in how they progress the plot, especially since most of it is revisiting or re-contextualizing things we learned from pre-apocalypse. There's not much left so I doubt this will change.

The other component that is very hit-or-miss is the slice-of-life atmosphere of the post-apocalypse timeline. While we don't know everything, we know enough to feel that the situation the characters are going through is much more serious than they let on, but the story doesn't really let you feel anxious for them in the post-apocalypse timeline. You almost get the sense that life in the post-apocalyptic anarchy is pretty chill, albeit lower tech than the society that came before. There are vignettes that touch on how brutal life can get, but again, because the pacing is poor, these don't really stick.

I do feel that the author has the ability to nail the ending. The expectations aren't super high, and while everyone certainly has their theories, the plot is straightforward enough that we all have a good sense of where things are heading. So, crossing my fingers.

Where to start... what I have read is not fan service anymore. It reaches child p-graphy at times. Flabbergasting...

Reading this, you'll also be subjected to this terrible trope of the boy in love with their sister. This is called incest and it is not romantic. Please stop that.

You'll also have to deal with romanticisation of rape. Once again, it is used to advance the story of female characters, while never calling what it is, and not dealing with the trauma it induces.

How can anyone read this and not care at all about these aspects of the story?
