5-toubun no Hanayome (The Quintessential Quintuplets)

Considered a genius, high school student Fuutarou Uesugi excels at studying and obtains a perfect score on every test. Due to his intense focus in that regard, he is a reclusive person with no friends. Additionally, he lives in a tight financial state as a result of family debts.

Fuutarou's mundane lifestyle is interrupted when Itsuki Nakano, a new transfer student, contests him for his usual lunch seat. After a short altercation, Fuutarou emerges victorious by insulting Itsuki's eating habits, which angers her enough to leave. However, when Fuutarou learns that he has been offered the private tutor position of a wealthy family's academically hopeless daughters, he immediately regrets his prior encounter. It turns out that the beneficiaries of his tutoring are none other than Itsuki and her four identical siblings: the shy Miku, the cheerful Yotsuba, the devious Nino, and the mature Ichika!

Teaching these quintuplets may prove more difficult for Fuutarou than he initially expected, as the last thing they want to do is seriously study. Now, Fuutarou must face the various challenges of tutoring five beautiful yet eccentric girls.

5-toubun no Hanayome won the 43rd Kodansha Manga Award in the shounen category, along with Fumetsu no Anata e. The series ranked eighth in the Best Printed Manga category at the fourth Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Awards in 2018.

The series was published in English as The Quintessential Quintuplets by Kodansha Comic USA from June 26, 2018, to August 11, 2020. It was also released in Spanish by Panini Comics from December 18, 2019, to February 9, 2022; in Brazilian Portuguese by Panini Comics from April 3, 2020, to June 18, 2022; and in Polish by Studio JG from October 23, 2020, to June 30, 2023.

Awesome story where Futaro, a broke but top of his class student, has to provide for his family (his father and his sister) after their mother passed away. Luckily his dad finds him a job as a tutor and it just so happens to be for 5 quintuplets he met at his school earlier during the day. At the end of the story he will need to pick between one of them to confess his feelings to, although Just like Highlander, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

Quintessential is your classic harem battle royale, you got 4 out of 5 sisters all trying to eat the same cake, our MC Fuutarou. Here's the issue, for the first 110 chapters you have 3 sisters duking it out. Each of these three sisters so deeply entrenched in love, and trying to outmaneuver each other in the most desperate, most in love way they can. And picture this, from chapter 110 we get our fourth sister, who to this point had a 0% expected chance of winning that victory royale, sweeping in, and winning the whole dang thing. WTFFFFFFFFF!!!!!! You're telling me ...

This review has no spoilers. I'd like to save you the trouble of reading this manga if you're on the fence about it, and I can't reasonably do that if I deter you from wanting to read this review to avoid spoilers.

There's a very good reason this series is so well-renowned, and that reason comes in the form of roughly the first 80-100 chapters of the series. The protagonist and the two of the five sisters who play the most pivotal roles in the story are all exceptionally well-designed, each going through remarkable personal growth over the course of the story. Romance is a key ... component, but you won't find senseless chapters dedicated to fanservice or scenes that tastelessly have their romantic moments ruined by convenient distractions popping up at the wrong time. It's a real story with real characters, and it's an absolute pleasure.

Unfortunately, real life caught up with Negi, the author. After that 80-to-100 chapter mark, all of the effort and care put into the story slipped hard. What follows is a *violent* decline in quality. Many on this site will tell you this series is astonishing. To this day, the majority of the reviews on MAL still promise a compelling story. Too bad for you; you won't get one.

Instead, the final stretch of the manga is a string of bland, meandering arcs that smoothly transition into perhaps the biggest middle finger you could possibly give to the long-time readers of your manga. After centring so much of the story around those two sisters with genuine romantic appeal, who grew and changed so much throughout the course of the story, and whom upwards of 80% of the fanbase voted as their favorite character, the story closes by having the protagonist hand his heart to a side character. The bland girl with almost no appeal, no presence in the story, and quite literally zero romantic development. Because fuck you.

All the careful buildup, all the layered interactions, the romantic development — none of it matters. Credit where credit is due, the author definitely nailed the subversive part of storytelling with The Quintessential Quintuplets. Too bad he had to fuck the storytelling part in order to do it. I think the biggest tragedy of this series is that it could've been great, and it very nearly was. But you can feel, with every carelessly written chapter toward the end, just how badly it didn't want to be anymore.

Don't bother with it. If you read this manga, it will spit on a lot more than just your time. Go read Locked to Death or Please Behave, My Wife. Your time, feelings, and investment will be much better spent.
