great episode.

Hans' speech was soo good.

Also, that Vishas foot scene lowk caught me off guard

I cant get the image of Yor out my head every time I hear Visha, so my headcannon is Yor is just Visha in the future after the war.
working under Tanya is how she got so strong. lol

Tanya was aura farming on that outro

Hans' speech was epic with excellent direction and visuals, and I loved seeing the adorable Tanya moments at the end. Still, mostly a setup episode, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Solid OP and ED but rather underwhelming compared to S1.

The obvious "analogies" the author makes are amusing, but they're also extremely shallow, although I'm demanding a lot from a 24-minute episode...

peak opening and ending although I think i do prefer last seasons ending song. other than that this episode was also very good, loved the world building and politics. Also the 2 ending scenes between Visha and Tanya were great.

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Review
SAGA OF TANYA THE EVIL II E02

EXPOSED.
Their real motive changes everything.

I did not have huge reactions to this episode, but I also never felt the time pass. It is almost entirely built around conversations, yet I stayed engaged because every exchange brings the episode closer to one question: why does the enemy keep fighting?

I also liked how “friend” and “homeland” keep returning. Zettour and Rudersdorf’s old friendship allows them to speak honestly. Other nations use friendship for convenience, while Mary and Liliya sincerely connect over fallen soldiers who need to return home. The interrogation later gives all these moments the same meaning.

That interrogation is the scene that pulled me in the most. Every report gives the same communist answer, but Visha notices how biased they are and decides to listen for herself. The room is small, cigarette smoke hangs in the air and the pauses grow heavier. When she asks the prisoner why he fights, his reply could not be simpler: not for the party, but for his homeland.

That answer immediately changes how Tanya sees the war. The Empire has been treating nationalists as communists, and its brutality has only given them more reasons to resist. I also like that Tanya admits her own hatred of communists blinded her. She recognizes the same flaw in herself that she just found in the reports.

What impressed me most is that she does not stop at understanding the enemy. She turns that answer into a strategy by separating the nationalists from the party, creating national councils and giving them another side to stand with. With supply trucks being attacked and soldiers reaching their limit, the idea feels necessary rather than theoretical.

Zettour’s speech brings everything together. He repeats peace, homeland, independence and friendship in front of the crowd, but those words no longer sound like one prisoner’s honest answer. They have been turned into a political weapon. The light isolates him above the crowd, while the images move beyond the podium and make his promises feel sincere and calculated at the same time. I found the entire scene impressive and unsettling.

Even the final reactions keep returning to friendship in different ways. Loria panics when he realizes the Empire has found new allies. Tanya later thinks of Visha as more than a simple friend, while Ildoa wonders whether the Empire will still listen to those it already considered friends. I enjoyed how the episode moves from major political consequences back to a quiet coffee scene without losing its thread.

The characters do not move constantly, but I never felt like I was watching lifeless conversations. The smoke, hands, posture, expressions, voices and pauses give every scene enough presence.

I had fewer explosive reactions than during a major battle episode, but I came away impressed by how carefully everything connects. One honest answer changes the meaning of every conversation before it and the course of an entire front after it.

The change in strategy to creating allies and making friends to survive was different for the series and how the Empire operates, but tactically would have been needed to sustain itself. It's something different to the first season, whether it is fun to follow or not, so I appreciate it. Han managed to convey his points really well to create some breathing room for the Empire that is very much needed. A bit of a slow episode and somewhat boring to start off with, but the second half picked up just enough for me to call it okay by the end. The OP and ED songs when hearing them in this episode are nowhere near as catchy as season 1's, so that's a shame.

Once again, we are treated to exceptional sound editing and character progression. The animation remains crisp, and the conflict stays ripe. I'm loving the Zettour arc especially, with his more detailed facial expressions and exceptional vocal performance.

I'm willing to give every decent show a break of 5-10 years if they return with consistent quality like Youjo Senki has.

The song playing in that old-timey player seems to be Heil dir im Siegerkranz (Hail Thee in the Victor's Crown, or Hail the King), the Prussian and Imperial German Anthem.

The reason was much more simple, the core of human, their love for their homeland. Tanya didn't take time to prey on it. Special place in hell eh, eh Tanya. I wonder who else has one big room there. Also that foot scene was absolutely necessary. Tanya neko look when she heard coffee was cute.

Tanya can see the holes in communism, luckily for her she's not in nazi germany which is expansionist and genocidal by design
@PettankoLover

I have a feeling that she will reach that setting at some point becuase God/X being just wants to be spiteful to get her to pray to a higher being for help.
She knows perfectly well that if nazi germany develops she is pretty much done for, she either gets executed after they lose or in battle, because there is no way they win with that kind of ideological backbone.

On regards to the episode.

Because a soldier says they want to protect their country or the place they live being interpreted as nationalists is one hell of a leap.

That could be interpreted as a patriotic statement, in fact it probably is, the guy says they hate the state and the politics of it, but love the people and the place they come from, that isn't a nationalist statement.
