| Akiyama did manage to help Nao out again during a very tough period for her when it felt like hope was lost regarding the votes. But with a bit of luck and forgery, and communication with the other members about Fukunaga's advantage, the situation has turned around completely, Nao is not just showing signs of life, but is in full control of the Round now. I like that Nao showed some signs of real development here, and had to get her hands dirty a little bit than solely take the backseat. Previously, Akiyama was the one that managed to do everything but this time, Nao had to do her part in this as well. She had to accept the strategy in her match up against Fukunaga with the cards, she had to speak to everyone directly with her motives in mind. She paid off a bunch to get votes in, and now that everyone else are in a lot of trouble with wanting to avoid in being last, Nao can look to benefit by screwing someone in particular over, or getting a ton of value back in profit from looks of things with scalping the votes together, and knowing the demand that people need to outbid each other to survive and not be last. She was gullible and was trusting far too easily, and she managed to use that aspect with the help of Akiyama, to her advantage and made everyone else look like suckers. This was interesting stuff. |
| Wait Nao actually locked in and tricked someone instead of being the victim, am I hallucinating? I just wish she could get her own legitimate chance to shine instead of constantly being a damsel in distress. The fact she was going to trust Fukunaga before Akiyama showed up, after she repeatedly has fucked her over in the last few episodes pissed me off wtf. Like what are you doing? I’d rather lose on my own than continually feed victories to a POS that’s taking advantage of me.. That said, it was extremely satisfying to see the sheer look of disgust on Fukunaga face after she realized Nao beat her at the rigged game lmao. ATP I’m tired of seeing Fukunaga tho can we get rid of this bitch please I really hope this ends up being the beginning of Nao transformation into a legitimate player and being able to manipulate people on her own because while I like she and Akiyama chemistry, I’m tired of her being a damsel in distress needing to be saved all the time. She never gonna be a demon, but let her get some shine, lol. Seeing all the players legitimately shocked that she ended up on the top of the leaderboard when they thought she was a free win lmaooo. Cannot wait to see what she and Akiyama cook up next week |

| What an a Absolute Peak this episode was ! Nao really made me furious when she fell for Fukunaga's trickery once again but when Akiyama came to the rescue and Nao managed to pull one over on Fukunaga I felt so relieved. What a saviour he is ! Nao managed to fool every one of them to reach the top.. finally the girl showed that she got it in her to lie 😂❤️🔥❤️🔥 I wonder what she promised for the other guys.. the same 70 million ?! But I don't think so. That would leave Nao in debt. When Nao laughs at everybody and Akiyama showed himself infront of others and the boss music started playing.. damn, it gave me the chills 😭😭 |

Akiyama looks very happy that Nao got tricked. He always try to find an excuse to return to high stake game but without being a scammer himself, and saving Nao seems like a perfect opportunity, plus he get to play a hero role.

| Nao's not changing personality, I don't know where y'all are getting that from. Her character trait is that she believes in people's honesty, not that she can't lie herself; she just hasn't had an opportunity up 'til now to actually take an active part in that, since the first two games were largely handled by Akiyama. Though that doesn't even matter cause she's not even really doing all that much "lying" here. The majority of her claims are entirely true, she's just omitting details. Nao's strength is that her percieved naivety makes people's actions towards her more predictable, either through gaining their trust or making them believe she's an easy target. She's like a Watson to Akiyama's Sherlock, serving as an outlet for the viewer to understand the plan as well as a tool for helping exercise it. |

| I mean you can say what you want about Nao, but it all feels very shallow if she still needs Akiyama to help her out every time. Using her perceived naivity and innocence to lure people in is all well and good, but she is still has no agency of her own at this point. And when she does, it goes innevitably wrong. I mean of course she can't change drastically all of the sudden, that wouldn't be very believable, but I just can't give her much credit for being able to execute Akiyamas ideas, because she was doing that before this game as well, so there is no real change in their dynamic. |

She would have sat in the corner crying losing every round if not for Deus ex machina Akiyama showing up to explain where Nao went wrong and how to make a come back. The only thing this hopefully changes is that the useless Nao arc can be done with since she is finally retaining things she should have learned during the first 2 games.  |

| Oh I love this episode so much, my favorite by far, first, I love the fact she finally realizes she's stupid, acknowledging her weakness is the first step into the right direction, second, while she was rescued by Akiyama as predicted, I'm not half as disappointed as I thought I would last episode, on the contrary, I'm overjoyed, because, while she just followed his instructions, he didn't take over and played in her stead like in the first 2 games, she continued to play herself and had to pull off an act she doesn't seem capable off making it the more easier to fool everyone, that's the difference, and I hope the effort Akiyama helped her put this time will teach her a lesson or 2, and either way, going from her crying after once again stupidly falling for another lie to the 2 of them owning everyone was extremely satisfying. |

Nor that it does actually matter at this point, but the way manga works in a separate chapters - mangaka was teaching people on expected value and how the misread all-ins are working in games. As an experienced casual poker player, you could sniff it from a mile away that's why Akiyama nails it on arrival. Yet the thing about skewed 50/50 is that Fukunaga should have denied Nao's proposal. It was the only way Nao would ever got votes from him. Greed in gambling kills you and overconfidence is abusable. In authors view kids should learn from that so they don't claim some stupid shit. |

What I liked: pacing and the cleverness of strategies.
What I didn't like: everything else. Above all, Akiyama in his best shining-knight-in-white-armour being the one getting Nao out of trouble... again. Twice in the same episode.
Also, Nao bluffing like a pro when she's always described as "stupidly honest"? Well, not exactly how I envisioned her. Still, this is not as egregious as Akiyama being the convenient deus-ex-machina once more.
So, putting this on hold. I'd like to go ahead especially now that games are clever, but this is definitely the show I like the least this season, and life happens. I'll binge-watch it in some months if I'll have time.
To whomever will keep watching: enjoy.

| @Kyou_Ryuu You as a writer should know the meaning of Deus Ex being an inexplainable plot device, right? Here's just pure logic and BASIC poker strats. I mean from a viewers Pov, not Nao's. What I don't like in Downsizing is the fact how stupid shown all other Npcs are. By the poker logic, Nao shouldve gone only to absolute fishes and not write a M-ticket to EACH of them. But it's a conscious poker dramatic effect of flipping the table and becoming a sole chip leader to decide the game. So people might claim Deus Ex just on its theatrical value. But yet this is consistent with how Akiyama does things, so it's not that unexpected too. It's more of a Chekhov's gun really, once you saw how they all believed Fukunaga it was evident they'd believe Nao. On real pokers table there's a high probability those closer to lower bankroll don't risk ANY shit no matter how stupid they are cause instead of being driven by greed they are solely driven by fear. |

| @Ikaer Technically, it's just supposed to be locked on so they can't reach for food & drinks. LGT orgs don't give a shit someone joins to give advice as long as he's not making any actions himself. But theres obviously a reason why Akiyama of all people wasn't stopped. It's very simple and powerful one - he is a winner of Round 2, and all participants are the losers. The key to understanding it Its called restructuring aka layoff game where the players vote for those who they want to keep. Akiyama jumping in is yet another clever manipulation by LGT which moves you an inch closer understanding the true purpose of this game with Round 3 in mind. |

| @Zarutaku As much as I personally agree Nao could have thought about cheating herself, she would failed at concealing it and there's a reason why Akiyama is needed for all explanations... But yes I know of it only because I know what Round 3 is. If you consider how it happened in manga ongoing it's a meta game and One Outs level of flip which is entertaining by itself. |

| What people need to consider on Downsizing playing out that way is the manga weekly release which allowed mangaka very cleverly play with his ONGOING readers. I illustrate it below Week1 - ch. 18 - after Akiyama flashback, Nao enters Revival clearly stated as a stack leader. So she is most probable to win. Week2 - ch. 19 - game rules are announced, Nao is no longer most probable to win (flip), but Fukunaga most probable to lose Week3 - ch. 20 - Fukunaga runs the pitch meeting so now Nao is ostracized from the group too (flip), Fukunaga offers plan. Week4 - ch. 21 - Fukunaga executes the plan, ostracizing Nao now shes most probable to lose, Fukunaga most probable to win (flip) Week5 - ch. 22 - Nao is devastated, when she learns all NPC votes are sold via M-tickets Week6 - ch. 23 - Fukunaga offers Nao a Joker game as a trade. Nao loses but Akiyama arrives (flip) Week7 - ch. 24 - Nao wins 10 Votes from Fukunaga (flip), but no explanation given Week8 - ch. 25 - cheating explanation given, Naos move towards NPC is shown as you learn now counted votes can be sold (flip) Week9 - ch. 26 - Nao's liar triumph, Akiyama reveals himself and he decides the game (flip) Weeks9-10 - ch. 27-28 - end of Downsizing game (by that moment you still don't know who loses) so still (flip) Week11 - ch. 29 - Round 3 starts Week12 - ch. 30 - Round 3 explained and youare handed out the final META FLIP on Revival Round. So you have 3 months of constant flips as the build up to the game where flips evolutionize to the full counter strats. In anime you don't have that effect cause there are no weekly delays between the flips you Dont feel them and Downsizing feels just a lesson in poker, it doesn't feel as an intro to different beast of a game. Last but not least both live actions didn't have META FLIP and that's why they are all subpar to anime adaptation. Y'all very close to the absolute greatness where you'd appreciate everything you were shown and learned as of now from a completely different angle. Personally I rate the build up and mangaka's meta-game & teasing+foreshadowing at the highest level. Liar Game doesn't start when other players learn Nao can lie and trick NPCs. Liar Game truly starts on Round 3 because *nah, I ain't even hinting it* |

| This was starting to feel like a sort of animal abuse at the beginning of this episode with the helpless Nao getting once more pummeled by the bully, but then... Akiyama saves the day as expected and, in a shocking move, Nao manages to become a LIAR and takes a total control of the game. What a brilliant move by the main duo! With Nao in a comfortable lead, she can dictate the fates of the other players and could for example sell a bunch of her votes for 100 million to eager players. Excited for next week. |

That said, I actually did like that after his pep talk and strategy explanation, Nao managed to play her part in the plan. I would not really call her actions outright lying, though. It felt more like omitting certain information, as someone else mentioned, which honestly fits her character better and makes sense for who she is. My issue is more that even if Nao is slowly being pushed in the right direction as a player, it still did not really come from herself. She was bailed out again, and that keeps reinforcing the feeling that she is stuck in the damsel in distress role while Akiyama does the actual heavy lifting. I do not need Nao to become manipulative, ruthless, or suddenly turn into a genius strategist. That is not what I want from her character. But I do hope the anime eventually gives her more agency. I want to see her become a more capable player in her own way, someone who can think through situations, make decisions, and contribute without always needing Akiyama to guide or rescue her. Her kindness can still stay intact. I actually think that could be interesting. I just want that kindness to develop into something more active and self-aware instead of constantly leaving her helpless until someone else steps in. All things considered pretty decent episode. Might be one of the best ones so far! |

| The Nao comeback starts now! Wow she really pulled it off, was it with the help of Akiyama? Yeah, but she was the one that actually had to go and put the plans into action, like she had to conceal that she was cheating at Yuji’s game, and she had to convince everyone in the game to give her ten votes, she put in the work and completely turned things around, she may not have the mindset that works well in the Liar Game but she can be quite convincing if she knows what to do. Now I’m just wondering how exactly she convinced everyone to give her ten votes, we know how it went with at least one guy, but did she hand over all that money to everyone else too? I thought the M Tickets were like binding contracts, unless there’s some trick to it, but hey I guess we’ll find out next time. It is unfortunate tho that even if Nao kinda locked in here, she already lost some viewers before this point. Well it is what it is, I’ve been enjoying this show since day one and it’s one of my favorite shows airing rn personally, if it lost some people then oh well, more for me lol. |
| Nice episode, finally the pacing got better. They should've reached this part sooner imo. The show spent too much time with those initial games. Akiyama is not deus ex machina, if he was he wouldn't thrown in jail in the first place. And Nao can lie, it is just not her way of living. |

| @Gwynbleidd_Alan Nao only gets better from now on. Yes, she becomes a full-fledged player by the design. Viewers would see more great moments with Nao and her determination. I still consider Nao insane personally and I think anime highlights it by showing Nao's emotions in that same episode: from openly crying to smiling to cheating to lying to everyone in a span of two hours. Not to mention being morally destroyed and ostracized. And the girl is not fazed, that's my way that's my Mr Akiyama she thinks. It's not gutwrenching she lost first game to Fukunaga. Its the price she paid for it. 30 mil yen that's 250k+ USD bet on "50/50" game after she saw Fukunaga beat Miura to the ground. Now you can check it against other anime gamblers on a cash value basis, and you'd get a grip on the insaness territory this train is going up full speed. Nao literally bet way more than an average house value in 2005, 85% of her money stack at the single 50/50 game. And then on losing she almost doubled up on her wager. That's taking a 1:1 debt (40 millions yen) on hit for Nao and Fukunaga took that bait as a child. Now if you never played cash games and it's all but a numbers for you anyway, youd never comprehend how profitable being considered dumb and honest (while having Mr. Akiyama at your back) in this tournament is. Nao doesn't give a fuck about money whatsoever. Moreover the girl hooked poor Mr. Akiyama into facing other madmen who do give a fuck about money. Now go and tell me she isn't addicted and isn't driven by her mad goal. She shares the exact same insanity trait as Squid Game mc while being female and much more obnoxious on top of that. Ngl to you I don't know how average ongoing manga reader thought Nao is just a pure heart kind girl with no dark traits. Yeah, bet that house away, why not. Yes, Nao Kanzaki thought 50% win rate means she is winning it on a first take. No matter which situation you are in at 5/10 game rounds, no matter how stressed you are you don't take 50-50 bets from no one. It's not make or break condition at 8/10 onwards... The problem with that type of player: she is always insane whether it's good move, bad move, winning, losing - nah everything stays insane. How can you read her at the place of her opponents now? |

| Nao at least showed she can prove competent at following orders/directions/a plan. Which is actually easier said than done. Hopefully one day she can think of this kind of stuff all on her own, but that may be asking too much. Like I said last week, Akiyama returns and instantly the series gets better again. |

You may not like that trope, but that's just a matter of personal preference, and it doesn't mean the narrative is bad, right? And of course, the fact that this trope was used in this arc doesn't mean it will be used in future arcs as well. Nice episode, finally the pacing got better. They should've reached this part sooner imo. The show spent too much time with those initial games.
Akiyama is not deus ex machina, if he was he wouldn't thrown in jail in the first place. And Nao can lie, it is just not her way of living.

There's no way they could have done that without undermining the previous story arcs, which were already fast-paced and didn't contain any pointless scenes. | was half hoping for the bald chick to absolutely deck the heck out of her at the end, but she's unbearable herself so there was no possible way to make the final outcome satisfying. |

| As predicted Akiyama came to the rescue. Why he is allowed to interfere in the game is unclear though. I am ever so disappointed he is there too, it seems obvious that Nao is incapable of playing the game without Akiyama holding her hand the entire time. Is there any reason to keep watching at this point if the same story beats keep repeating over and over? |
