I think our new quest for this village should be getting a frog villager. I mean, how can you have grannies and little kids but no frogs now that we know they exist? They seem pretty chill lol.

I do feel pretty bad for those kids, but at the same time I’m kinda jealous because they get to sleep on the baar’s as plushies every night. Anyways, I guess those weren’t their parents in the ED after all… that’s kinda sad.

I mean ... it's watchable. It's not great. They have an issue with larger groups of characters. They sorta just have evreyone nod together. Bad directing :/. It just makes it seem very, very low budget. Poor development. They keep doing it over and over again too. It makes the world feel extremely empty and hollow, which is very much the impression that this show keeps giving.

"You misunderstand, sir, these are not slaves! They're just.... humanoid merchandise!"

Anyway, this show, frankly, isn't very good. Was that a CGI version of Klaus training at the beginning? The writing reminds me of the kind of stuff cringy teens come up with for their fanfics and Tumblr RP.

In a way it's almost endearingly bad? Plus, I've got a soft spot for "Let's Build A Nation" type fantasy slop, and so I'll stick with it for now. I could see it getting boring over time, but for now it's watchable as a guilty pleasure.

Dias should hire that frog to check if the elves' parents are still alive or not, and bring them back to his village.

Meanwhile those sheeps are more demanding than ever. It's kinda strange they're not extinct yet.

Sad that he will not be a part of the fixed cast, but hoping for him to make comebacks with a higher frequency 🙏🏻

I enjoyed Klaus and Francis the Sheep (Baar) talking to one another 😂

It is still kind of funny how much of the plot is progressed by Alna saying "My horn is glowing. A human is coming from the East!", but it's nice though still, and guess it's an efficient way of changing pace.

The two elven-looking children from the closing song have been introduced. I was expected that they'd be Dias and Alna's twin daughters, but they're orphans instead (and it seems they might have 'cataclysmic', or not, magical heritage). It also seems like things will stay fairly wholesome with the child sisters with them basically acting as Dias and Alna's children. I was worried it could go a creepy direction if they're not his blood children, but hopefully all fine!

Finally, the new visiting Lord isn't giving a good first impression 😅

Well, in that kind of World, living that long means your both lucky & you got some decent survival skills. The average lifespan is probably 35-50. MAX. So those are the kids. They appear to be elves.
It doesn't bode well that the Royal Family Dias was loyal to is now playing A Game of Thrones. We all know where that leads. Ask the Incas because they were doing it when the Spanish showed up. Between that & Smallpox, well... The rest is History as they say.

The CGI is kinda ass imo, plus the Alna and her magic horn make things rather stale. She can turn people and the yurts invisible, talks to animals (who talk back), can detect hostility, detect whether people are telling the truth or lying, and can detect whenever people enter their domain. Dias also doesn't seem to have much depth to his personality, you'd think a battle-hardened veteran in such a civilisation would have more about him but he's just a cheery and sincere bundle of positivity and it makes him feel one dimensional. I have no issue with him being a man of strong moral fibre but there's just nothing to him (plus I find his face a weird blend of suitably weathered and way too youthful, it looks off).
I'm not really enjoying this too much honestly, if you couldn't already tell. I was intrigued about the premise of a well-in-his-years veteran establishing his domain but I'll be dropping this here.

Well, the episode wasn’t very special. Everyone is nice and friendly. Increasing population with old hags was hilarious. The kids backstory was a bit very sad, the empty really made them appear as slaves. Dias will be a great dad and Alna a good mum she can even tell which daughter is lying lol.

It was a nice improvement over Roman times: 25 was the avg lifespan (all the early deaths). But yeah, life was short, brutal, and painful.

Happy to live in 2026. Could do with being in 2012 again.

"They're not slaves, they're human merchandise". Riiiiight. And the distinction is what exactly?

I guess this is a world of magic, so maybe it means actual slaves have obedience crests or other crap like that. We did see someone in a collar, and the girls didn't have any of that going on.

Looks like the approaching lord has an entourage of slaves, though. Seems like some of them might be beastkin too. I doubt that's going to go over well, though perhaps they're aiming to subvert expectations.

@Mirality The distinction is that froggy is not a slaver, although it isn't clear to me why the parents sold them if they still had money.

Supposedly they were super sick and dying, so they wanted their kids to have a chance to survive away from them -- it'd be too late after they died. Presumably whatever it was wasn't contagious (so the kids didn't have it despite both parents having it) and for some reason they couldn't use that money to pay a healer.

In other words, plot contrivance reasons.

The parents were dieing. They couldn't bring them back to the village because they would kill the twins. The parents knew the twins would probably wouldn't survive in the woods since they are extremely young. So they took a gamble with the frog merchant to find someone to take care of the twins.

To be fair, it might not have been a sickness -- they might have been physically injured during the escape, and not had the strength to go further. Though that still spells plot contrivance that the merchant found them like that.

At first I thought the episode was critically commenting on the common anime trope of "slavery, but it's OK because the nice MC is doing it." Obviously I was a fool, mere minutes later the nice MC buys orphan slaves despite supposedly hating it. WTF.

If froggy was not a slaver he would not have only taken the kids after being convinced they were "merchandise" and would have given them to Dias without having to be paid. Froggy is 100% a slave merchant.

@amf85 Technically, they were slaves, but it's fine because froggy only took them at the insistence of the dying parents. The entire reason Dias is against buying slaves, even to free them, from actual slavers, is basic economics, supporting the slave trade would only increase the demand for more slaves.

That's not what happened. The parents asked the merchant to take the kids because they were dying but he refused and only agreed after they paid him to take them. Eventually the money they paid him ran out and they were eating into his profits so he was looking for someone to take them in, not buy them, and Dias agreed and offered to pay back the money the merchant has spent on the girls up to that point.

Rare to have a writer pushing back the normalization of slavery in fantasy worlds. Good on Dias!

The animators didn't have to do this, but they still animated the whole rolling back of his tongue. Fantastic.

And the village grows~

So it turns out the twins are being adopted as sisters of Alna. Guess that kicks the "old man marries young wife" can down the road a bit more.

Frog: "we couldn't offload 'em in the beastkin nation, but you're a human, I bet you'll take them."
Frog: "I said no, seein' as I don't do charity work."..."but then they offered money and said I could take them as merchandise"..."but the money is all gone and they're putting me in the red"
Dias: ...And I'll pay in materials to cover what you've spent supporting them.
Frog: "you got yourself a deal sir!"

He refused to take them until he was told he could treat them as merchandise, failed to sell them, so he went to the human nation where he knows they have slave trading. He then accepts the deal after being offered enough money to break even because he's desperate to offload them to anyone because they're costing more money than they're worth.

He's not technically a slave trader (which is why the blue horn showed he wasn't lying), he is a merchant. But he only took them to sell and then does just that.

Some extra lines that add context.
Maya: I'm sorry , but we do not wish to purchase slaves.
Peijindo: Ya, got it all wrong. These two ain't slaves! If I hadn't taken as merchandise, they'd be dead, I tell ya!
Peijindo: I said no, seein' as I don't do charity work...but then they offered money and said I could take them as merchandise.
Peijindo: Couldn't say no after that.
Dias: I'll take custody of these two.

He was reluctant to take them until the parents twisted his arm seeing how desperate they were.
There was nothing to indicate he was looking to sell them just to find someone to take them in. If he wanted to make a profit he could have just taken the money and dumped them off somewhere.
Dias did not purchase them but took them into his custody and decided entirely on his own to pay the merchant the cost of supporting the kids.
Peijindo seems to only see things from the perspective of a merchant so he see what just happened as a trade deal.

@amf85 That's not an interpretation, it's a fact. Regardless, Dias apprehension about buying slaves is in regard to the economics of it, which doesn't apply to this trader who took in the girls as "merchandise" on an exception from their dying parents. At the very least there's a huge difference between a technicality and someone whose only business is slaving. I don't even know what you're arguing about at this point. lol

@amf85 You're completely assuming he failed to sell them as slaves, and not to someone who would adopt them.
@LostSpectre Yes. He explicitly says he refused to save them until he was offered them as merchandise. He's not a charity (his words), he took them as merchandise (his words/parents words). To me the obvious connection is that the reason he's taking them now when he wouldn't before is that now he can profit. That's what he does. Again, he's a merchant, not a charity. The parents knew this, it was a desperate measure to make sure their kids lived at all. Which is what he said...they would have died if he hadn't taken them. So yeah, we're left to assume that when he tried to "offload" them, it means sell, because that's what fits the rest. One can assume that he tried to give them away, but that doesn't fit any other part of what we're told. The whole "not slaves, merchandise" "not slaver, merchant" distinction is semantics. He's desperate to get rid of the kids who are costing him money and he can't sell, he's told that they won't buy slaves, and he can see the idea makes the very large, scary human angry, so he's weasel-wording for his life, and none of it is TECHNICALLY untrue. He WAS offered them as "merchandise" not slaves. They WOULD have died without him taking them. He IS a merchant, not a slaver. So he's not technically lying, and the blue horn confirms the facts as true. But those technicalities don't change the practical reality that the story presents, that he only took them as merchandise, he couldn't sell them (believe or don't, don't care), and now he regrets agreeing to take them and is just trying to get rid of them and is happy to do so at cost. This is a very normal chain of events for a merchant who can't sell an item and is trying to cut their losses.

It's OK if you interpret differently, but this seems clear/most likely to me. I'm going to sleep.

Edit: meh, now I responded twice, I thought the first was Garland. Whatever. Anyways, like I said, I'm done.
