If there are only twelve, the season will probably end abruptly.

It will be around 24 episodes. The official Liar Game Twitter account confirmed on March 29 that the anime will run for two consecutive cours.
Hope you enjoy it! :D
@haiyashi21 Thanks for letting me know! (: We'll have more of this for a while, let's see how it goes.

Yeah, because we're still watching the beginning of the story. The anime is currently adapting volume 3 out of 19 of the manga. It's reasonable to expect new antagonists who are smarter and more interesting to be introduced soon. In the first 15 episodes of Kaiji Season 1, the antagonists were less smart than Fukunaga.

It's the third game and 9 episodes in already. That's longer than most movies. Sure, it's not an irredeemable mess, but I don't feel inclined to give even more time to it without any hints of being more. 9 episodes is a very fair shot. Many people have a 3 episode rule, and with this flood of cookie cutter isekai I rarely feel bad about dropping after 1 anymore. As for how it compares to Kaiji's schemes and counterplay... I guess I just straight disagree, but it's entirely possible I had lower standards 19 years ago.

Not really. The moral message may be addressed soon. The Downsizing Game isn't even over yet, and you're already judging it without seeing the full picture.

This is again how much of my time does a show deserve to make a point. Though honestly this was mostly to preempt all the comments I've seen in these threads that people don't get Nao. I don't think the show would be more compelling if she was successfully demonstrating the alternate path to deception. That's the kind of thing you can arrive at with a cursory discussion of prisoner's dilemma.

You are totally ignoring the fact that Nao didn't accept the gamble out of nowhere. In a normal situation, of course she would have denied Fukunaga's terms. That's exactly why Fukunaga waited until the end of the fifth round to offer the gamble. Put yourself in Nao's place. She was in a hopeless situation with zero votes and half of the Downsizing Game already gone. Of course she would try to grab onto any glimmer of hope. Fukunaga would have refused to play under any other terms or with any other tools, so what else could Nao possibly do? She didn't know Akiyama would show up to save her, so she had to try something.

I'm really not missing that. The show could have pushed that more successfully with Nao wondering about Fukunaga happening to have a strange deck, perhaps suggesting something else, and getting beaten down by "this is your only hope" and Fukunaga's force of personality. Though I don't think that would ring much more convincing than Akiyama's pseudo psychology that waiting until 9 would make it impossible for Fukunaga to check the other card. Yes, panic plays a role, but you know, I don't think most people starving in the forest would decide to ask a bear to share some honey. Some things Nao could have possibly done: suggest an alternative 50/50 game (which you say Fukunaga would refuse, but that refusal would make it obvious this is a bad idea), propose the same sort of bet to any of the other players, propose any other sort of deal for vote transfer to other players now that she knows it's allowed.

Haha, fair point, but certainly not consciously. I remember zero details. I think it's pretty easy to connect the dots from rule about front side of card to only one card has a front side, though.
Bio said:

I think 3 episodes is fine for Liar Game, since that's the entire 1st game. It introduces the main characters, premise, and basic strategies. If you don't like any of the characters or premise, why bother to continue watching?

At the very least, it should have been obvious once Nao lost. She returned the joker and only the joker to the bag half the times she drew it.

We already knew before this game even started that all of its participants would be losers from the previous round. So it never really made sense to expect a new smart antagonist to show up before this game ended, right? What changed since last week?

I think you are missing the point. You were implying that the moral message was being erased in this episode, and I'm saying that assumption is wrong. It's not even the first time Nao has deceived other players. Don't you remember when she pretended to cry during the Minority Game to convince people to follow her to Akiyama's room?

I was showing that Nao's decision to take the gamble was not as unreasonable as you were implying. Now you are showing how Nao could have avoided the trap if she had been smarter. Both things can be true at the same time, right?

P.S. I saw on your anime list that you watched One Outs. Did you enjoy it? Did you know it's from the same author who wrote Liar Game?

@Lucifrost

Yeah, I remember thinking the first episode was nothing special too. But I decided to keep watching because it's common for 2000s anime to have a slow start, right? And I trusted the people who recommended it. At the time, I was looking for an anime similar to Kaiji, and that's how I heard about One Outs.

It took a couple more episodes to get me hooked. After finishing the anime, I enjoyed it so much that I picked up the manga to finish the story. After that, I started reading Liar Game since I knew it was from the same author.

Now both are among my favorites, haha.

The 6.3 rating explains that people are too dumb for this anime, classroom of the elite is easier to digest and has an edgy main character.
Talking about underestimated monsters of the season we are still losing to the Reincarnated as a Vending Machine Season 3. 6.32 versus 6.57. We need to improve our psychological gamble mind game in next episodes LG fan bros

@sw it's been 9 episodes and even if some episodes are great, I notice it's not enough for the score to rise, even a small increase of +0.01 didn't happen yet. It's being decreasing this whole time. typical droppers who instant 1/10 always ruin the score for any animes.

Liar Game E9 — 8.7/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

She got us.

At first, this episode felt easy to read.

Nao still looked like Nao. Kind. Honest. Predictable. The type of person everyone in this game thinks they understand.

And that's exactly why the payoff works so well.

The more the episode progressed, the more I felt like something wasn't adding up. Every move looked obvious. Every decision seemed easy to explain. The rematch against Fukunaga felt like the entire point of the episode.

Until it wasn't.

The marked cards. The votes. Kikuzawa. One by one, every piece started falling into place.

And then everything connected.

That's when the episode completely got me.

Not because the plan was complicated.

Because I realized I had been looking at Nao the same way everyone else was.

As someone who could be manipulated.

As someone who needed to be protected.

As someone who would never be the one controlling the board.

The real twist isn't the vote transfer.

The real twist is realizing how much Nao has changed.

Akiyama is still the mastermind behind the strategy. He sees the trap, understands the probabilities, and builds the path forward. But for the first time, Nao doesn't just follow the plan. She carries it. She sells it. She makes everyone believe exactly what they want to believe.

Including us.

Production remains the weakest part of the episode. The animation is functional and heavily dialogue-driven, but the voice acting, tension, and structure do more than enough to make every reveal land.

What stayed with me after the episode wasn't the mechanics of the plan.

It was the feeling that Nao finally earned her place on the board.

And honestly, if you were still unsure about Liar Game before this episode, this is probably the moment to get on the train.

5/5 episode, mainly because of how much aura Shinichi farmed. Goodness gracious, chill, brother, that was just too much, man. I doubt I need to say this, but Shinichi was definitely the MVP of this episode. Also, Nao is the runner-up thanks to her spectacular acting skills.

What issue you have with Araki? Fast-paced editing or overdramatic use of lighting and color?

Even after getting the lead, Nao still seems doomed to lose a huge amount of money. But that might actually be the way for her to join Akiyama in the third round.

Then again, knowing Akiyama, he probably already has a plan to save her from that outcome.

Nao's not changing personality, I don't know where y'all are getting that from. Her character trait is that she believes in people's honesty, not that she can't lie herself; she just hasn't had an opportunity up 'til now to actually take an active part in that, since the first two games were largely handled by Akiyama. Though that doesn't even matter cause she's not even really doing all that much "lying" here. The majority of her claims are entirely true, she's just omitting details.

Nao's strength is that her percieved naivety makes people's actions towards her more predictable, either through gaining their trust or making them believe she's an easy target. She's like a Watson to Akiyama's Sherlock, serving as an outlet for the viewer to understand the plan as well as a tool for helping exercise it.
@ankougo I totally agree! I feel like people aren't thinking hard enough, she's utilizing the earnest nature she knows she has. She had been seeing people's very honest reactions to it in the other rounds.

Fukunaga having boredom set in because of how well she manipulated this game was quite a sight. But not even she was prepared for another Akiyama and Nao teamup.

All it took was truthful Nao to start telling some lies of her own and now she's back on top of the game as number one.

With all the large monetary amounts on the line just from this round, having all the other contestants freaked out and not thinking logically will certainly be key for Nao to get out of this one without incurring any debt.

this is where the game gets good. Plus Nao is starting to change. Her character started as honest to a fault which is why she kept getting taken advantage of. Now she's taken her first baby step and lied (on command). No spoilers but
. It just takes
. Even with 24 I don't know how far we're gonna get. But I do love the flip on this game. Let's go.

What I really liked about the outcome of this episode is, this trick worked BECAUSE it was Nao. She's small, sweet, innocent and naive and everyone recognizes that. Akiyama turned this into a strength when he had her pull this off. The same trick couldn't have worked if the man Akiyama himself offered the same proposition, because other participants would be wary of him.
