I think the reason Teasing Master Takagi-san connects with people so easily is because it captures a kind of love that feels almost forgotten. When you're young, you don't think about whether something will work out or where a relationship is supposed to go. You don't worry about all the things people overthink later on. You just know that being around someone makes you happy. You look for reasons to talk to them, you get excited over the smallest things, and you start caring about moments that would seem meaningless to anyone else.

That is exactly what makes Nishikata and Takagi's relationship so charming. Nishikata spends most of his time convinced that he is in some kind of battle against Takagi, constantly trying to beat her at her own games. He is experiencing feelings before he even understands them. He tries to act normal, he pretends he doesn't care, and he convinces himself that thinking about Takagi all the time doesn't mean anything. But the truth is, Nishikata is already there. He isn't waiting to fall in love with her he is simply trying to realize that he already has.

Takagi might seem like she’s just the girl who always manages to make Nishikata panic, and that’s the first impression most people get from her. She’s confident, playful, and somehow always knows exactly what to say to throw him off. She can see through his plans, predict his reactions, and stay one step ahead of him almost every time but what makes Takagi special isn’t the fact that she always wins. It’s the reason why she teases him in the first place. Her teasing never feels cruel, she isn’t trying to embarrass Nishikata or make him feel bad, she does it because she genuinely enjoys being around him. Every little challenge is just another excuse to talk to him, and every joke becomes another memory they get to share. What’s great about Takagi is that she understands Nishikata better than he understands himself. She knows what makes him nervous, what gets him competitive, and exactly how to push his buttons, but she also knows when to hold back. Even though she already understands her own feelings, she never rushes Nishikata or forces him to catch up. She just lets him figure things out in his own time.

That’s what makes their relationship feel so natural. Their bond doesn’t come from one huge romantic moment or some sudden realization. It comes from all the small interactions they build over time, until being around each other starts to feel completely normal. Before they even realize it, they’ve already become an important part of each other’s lives.

It's that awkward stage where you can feel something strongly but don't really know how to express it. You don't have everything figured out, you don't always know what to say, and sometimes you don't even understand why one person starts becoming so important to you. The series captures that confusion without making it feel embarrassing. Nishikata's overthinking, his nervousness, and his constant attempts to hide how much he cares are exactly what make those moments feel so familiar. Looking back, those things might seem silly, but when you were going through them, those feelings were completely real.

It's not the best romance but it's the romance I can confidently recommend.

Honestly, watching Takagi-san in 2026 feels like putting on the kind of show you leave running because you are too lazy to change the channel. It is decent enough to keep on in the background, easy enough to follow without much mental effort, and never quite irritating enough to make you turn it off. In that sense, the experience is a bit like buying a drink from a convenience store: not exciting, not memorable, but perfectly serviceable. That description fits the first few episodes especially well.

I can understand why some people enjoy stories that do not prioritize major progression, and there is nothing wrong with ... that as long as it does not become a reflection of stagnation in real life, too. To the show’s credit, the first half handles its formula consistently. Every day, school activities are reduced to small exchanges between Takagi and Nishikata, with the trio of comedic side characters adding extra energy. I also feel this was an important series for the voice cast. It gives the impression of being one of Konomi Kohara’s early breakout roles, and it also feels like an early moment where Rie Takahashi got to show a different side of her range. Instead of playing another loud, energetic isekai heroine, she voices someone with a little more subtlety and playfulness, and the use of her songs in the ending themes also helps the series stand out. Hearing Yuki Kaji as Nishikata is a bit strange at first, especially because audiences now associate him more with older or more intense characters after roles like Eren Yeager. It takes a little time to adjust to hearing his younger-sounding performance again.

As for the content itself, I do appreciate how the series treats ordinary middle-school life as something small and ordinary rather than trying to inflate it into some huge emotional epic. The fact that something as simple as 100 yen matters to the characters, or that sharing a canned drink on the way home from school can feel meaningful, gives the show a grounded charm. A lot of school anime try to turn adolescence into some grand, overdramatic personal saga, so there is something refreshing about how "Takagi-san" finds value in the mundane.

My main issue, though, is that beyond those strengths, the show does not offer much else. Watching the two leads interact, I never really felt much chemistry between them, and I never found myself wanting to root for them as a pair. Yes, the teasing here is much softer than something like "Nagatoro", but from Nishikata’s perspective, it can still feel annoying. He has a few promising qualities, and there are hints that he wants to improve himself, but mostly he just comes across as someone with low self-esteem who is too easily pushed around by Takagi.

Takagi herself also does not really win me over. Rather than feeling like someone who helps Nishikata grow or creates a genuinely supportive dynamic with him, she often comes across as someone who does not actually want him to change. The relationship feels static. She does not have many qualities beyond being the teasing girl who likes controlling the dynamic, yet is also too hesitant to let the relationship meaningfully evolve. At times, it feels as though she is written partly to appeal to the audience rather than to function as a convincing character in her own right. There are also a few slightly fan-service-oriented moments with her, though thankfully not enough to become unbearable.

Overall, I came away feeling that "Takagi-san" is simply an okay/ average anime built around a relationship I do not find especially compelling. Whether these two eventually become a couple or drift apart does not matter much to me, because they do not feel like a naturally good match. More than anything, they seem like two people stuck in a familiar pattern out of habit rather than real chemistry.

I cannot fathom why anyone would watch the first season of this anime and think anything other than how the man female is a cruel bully. I would use her name, but after seeing the first season I honeslty can't remember any of the characters names. The anime follows a pattern; main girl tricks/pranks/makes fun of the main boy in the series, the boy feels anxious/emberassed/mad about what she does, he tries to get back at her and constantly fails, boy gets in trouble. Not only does this unfold for the main characters, but the writer also does this with his audiance as he makes ... you believe that maybe the girl (who clearly likes the boy) is finally doing something nice for the boy only to go through the entire series laughing at you when you realize that each nice thing she does literally ends in her just doing another mean thing to him.

Besides the 2 main characters we have 3 other girls who show up in the show. I really don't understand why they show up in the show other than to give us a break from the main girls sadism. Are they all friends with the main characters? Haven't a clue. Are they in the same class, the same school, the same city??? No clue. They literally add nothing to the story other than giving us a break from the main characters constant bullying of the boy.
