The anime's tremendous and it got an incredible adaptation but the details that were left out and are present in the novels make me enjoy the franchise even more. You could say the novels are the better medium for the detail there and its focus on side character stories and additional world building the anime can't explain in detail, but I feel like the combination of both is even better than looking at it separately. The novel provides the details and monologues that showcases Rudeus' growth, the anime showcases the visual worldbuilding, action and extra layers in emotional scenes with the help of voice acting and music (and Yuiko Ohara's beautiful openings too with different visuals for each episode that shows how the story is progressing in that time while not just wasting it on generic opening visuals). The combo effect's probably why this is one of my overall favorites now.

That is true. The BD releases I have from 10 years ago were far more enjoyable than the garbage they're churning out now. There are hundreds of BD/DVD releases over the bast 30 years to enjoy before investing that time into the modern mainstream stuff. Though, watching the greatest hits of the last 3 decades will raise the bar, making the average new release will seem kind of bland.
That's also partly why I'm so into reading now - so much more variety to find something that matches my mood. Many anime are LN adaptations, but there are even more great LN's that didn't get anime adaptations.

I used to always get annoyed with people who complain that a movie or anime didn't do the book justice. I think one should enjoy a movie or anime for what it is, without comparing it to the book. However, recent anime adaptations have been so bad, I even find myself falling to that side as well. When I think of what it could've been, I find myself disappointed in the brain-dead idiot who put together the anime script. Normally, an anime should help a novel gain some publicity and make people want to read the novel. I feel like some of the more recent ones will be scaring prospective readers away instead.
