This anime spends 2–3 minutes before the opening recapping the previous episode, 1–2 minutes on unnecessary scenery shots, another 2–3 minutes recapping events that literally just happened, and over a minute replaying the last scene after every commercial break. In the end, you only get about 15 minutes of actual new content per episode.

Why is this listed as a 26-episode anime instead of having fewer episodes with tighter pacing?

I was thinking the exact same thing. Honestly you should read the manga, it's so much better.

I hate replaying the last scene! 😣 And yes I would also prefer each episode to be shorter so we don't have to see the recapitulation, the scene repetion and the main character "remembering" a moment we just saw!

They are using the one piece formula even though it doesn't work for them

Yeah I’m not sure why they wouldn’t just shorten the total number of episodes and bump the pacing up…probably because it would require animating new scenes instead of inserting ones that are already finished

And why don't we get a "Skip Recap" button at the beginning? We do on so many other series where the beginning ISN'T a recap!

I am going to imagine there was some economics involved in figuring out how to get the animation budget they needed to do they things they wanted to do.
And I can imagine a situation where they were able to justify x budget by making it a full 26 episodes, whereas if they cut it down to 13 more packed episodes, they would have been expected to do it with a fraction of the budget, which then means the quality would drop since they can't afford filler to then spend more time on animating the scenes they really wanted to. So blame the economics of creating an anime, nd having to make an episode with a certain amount of animation budget/time

The long previews let what we do get to see be higher quality since they have more animation time/budget for less new content per episode, and a full 26 episodes makes up for it giving is a large amount of total content for the season. The inconvenience of long previews every episode is essentially a minor inconvenience to bring you a busy, stylized, camera-heavy, and technically ambitious production. Would you prefer shittier quality and rushed animation just to get through the episodes/story faster? That's a ridiculous tradeoff, imo. There are plenty of hastily animated anime out there you can watch, don't come here and complain about an anime bending over backwards to avoid that fate.

Would we rather a 'dense' episode with One Punch Man Season 3 level animation for the action scenes? Just so you can avoid the repeated content, pffffft

Even a person with short attention spans can find this repetitive.
"Manga readers are annoying, all they do is complain or spoil the anime we discuss in an anime forum.
They should really do their whining at manga forums.

bro, it's not just the intro, it have more problem than you thought.
Unnecessary scenery shots, recapping events that literally just happened and replaying the last scene after every CM. They're just lazy smh.

I am only on ep 2 and this wasted time doing the repeat dance is making me twitch.
I think 15 min of new content might be a bit on the generous side.

Lets see how much of this I can handle before going to the manga.

yep, I just skipped trough most recent episode because of exactly what OP described. Literally like 5-10 minutes of content and rest is just recaps + OP/ED. They somehow achieved DBZ/One piece level of repetition with fraction of total number of episodes.

This should have been 12-13 eps and just remove the padding.

@Oiisu I'm more of a pessimist. I feel like the show got more attention than anticipated, or they needed to fill a time slot, so they changed the episode count from 13 to 26 but things happened and were left with 8 episodes worth of content. Therefore using extended recaps, unnecessary flashbacks, overly detailed, tedious and irksome explanations on stills/flashbacks, lengthy scenery scene transitions, ect... regardless, i feel like this show should be boycotted to keep production companies in check. If not, they have no reason to not implement these tactics more frequently. Granted a lot of shows used them in the past but this show is pushing it. I feel like the cause for this scenario isn't as morally justified as some prior shows/situations. I do have to admit, I am envious of your optimism, never lose it. i just can't see them employing the extent of these tactics for our benefit like quality optimization.

I mean realistically they were rold to make 26 episodes and weren't given the budget to make it the way the really wanted, but they still made it as close as they could but it came at the price of having to fill roughly 25 % of every episode with recycled footage.

10 minutes of flashback + 10 minutes of actual content. 10 x 26 = 260. 260/13 = 20.

So realistically this could have just been a 13 ep series. What a waste.

lol the studio has an aversion to making money so they're doing everything they can to sabotage themselves. for real tho this is probably one of the worst anime I've ever seen, and I've seen LOTS of slop. LMFAO maybe it's just money laundering for the producers

@uselessDM I've been thinking about this for a while.

Like how tf did this get 26 episodes.

My idea was that they were either told by the higher ups to make this 26 episodes long but weren't given a good budget (or enough time?) and are now filling every episode with way too much repeated stuff (stock/filler scenes, recaps, flashbacks, etc), or they promised to make it 26 episodes long, and are trying to save as much money as they can by reusing the same scenes over and over again across multiple episodes to pad them out. Repeat until you hopefully reach the 26th episode.

Idk enough about like the anime industry so I'm probably way off the mark, so I'll just go with your version for now. Either way, this sucks ass dude.

I know it won't happen, but I would love to one day know exactly what happened behind the scenes when it was decided that this would 26 episodes long, and how they decided to pad these episodes out, especially the recent ones...

Dude, I was just about to post this on the episode 9 discussion, until I saw this post. It's sooo true, they're padding the hell out off this. I really like the story and the animation, but it has so many unnecessary recaps and flashback and/or scenery shots that it gets kind of annoying. Reminds me of Undead Unluck, another good anime that had similar issues (though this one has it worse). I just watched episode 9 and added up all of its padding and it was 5 minutes 35 second, and if we add the op & ed and advance, a total of 8 minutes 55 second (not including some flashback where they were voicing new thoughts).

So yeah, I would also love a fan edit without the filler, it would make the story much more fluid.

This anime clearly has an overly detailed visual budget..
so the investors surely want to get their money back by selling the 26 episodes BD..
thinking they're making a masterpiece with that visual.

However, no matter how good the visual is, with this slow pace, watching this anime feels more like watching a short toddler cartoon,
with their typical extremely slow paced dialog, repeated scene, and near zero progress.

Maybe they will eventually re-release it in a compressed format, without the unnecessary things. That would be at least a 6 episodes ova, assuming it will be 26, and retain the current characteristics.
