Production company Tomorrow Studios (One Piece live-action) announced that they are working on a live-action adaptation of Samurai Champloo with the anime's director, Shinichirou Watanabe, attached to the project on Tuesday. The project is in early development.

The 26-episode original television anime, produced by Manglobe, aired from Spring 2004 to Winter 2005. Geneon Entertainment originally licensed and released the anime in North America before Funimation relicensed it following the expiration of their distribution deal.

A manga adaptation drawn by Masaru Gotsubo ran in Shounen Ace magazine from January to September 2004.

Tokyopop licensed the manga in English and released the two volumes in November 2005 and March 2006, respectively. The company rereleased both volumes into an omnibus edition in August 2008.

Synopsis
Fuu Kasumi is a young and clumsy waitress who spends her days peacefully working in a small teahouse. That is, until she accidentally spills a drink all over one of her customers! With a group of samurai now incessantly harassing her, Fuu desperately calls upon another samurai in the shop, Mugen, who quickly defeats them with his wild fighting technique, utilizing movements reminiscent to that of breakdancing. Unfortunately, Mugen decides to pick a fight with the unwilling ronin Jin, who wields a more precise and traditional style of swordfighting, and the latter proves to be a formidable opponent. The only problem is, they end up destroying the entire shop as well as accidentally killing the local magistrate's son.

For their crime, the two samurai are captured and set to be executed. However, they are rescued by Fuu, who hires the duo as her bodyguards. Though she no longer has a place to return to, the former waitress wishes to find a certain samurai who smells of sunflowers and enlists the help of the now exonerated pair to do so. Despite initially disapproving of this idea, the two eventually agree to assist the girl in her quest; thus, the trio embark upon an adventure to find this mysterious warrior—that is, if Fuu can keep Mugen and Jin from killing each other.

Set in an alternate Edo Period of Japan, Samurai Champloo follows the journey of these three eccentric individuals in an epic quest full of action, comedy, and dynamic sword fighting, all set to the beat of a unique hip-hop infused soundtrack. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Hmmm....not sure how I feel about this...I think they should leave perfectly good legends alone. Let the classic series' RIP and stop trying to make an easy buck...

I have zero hopes for this one. I don't know why they keep trying.

These guys seem to get a lot of praise for the One Piece adaptation, but I don't understand how people have conveniently forgotten that they also did the Cowboy Bebop live-action, which was less-warmly received, to put it lightly...

@perseii Netflix doesn't care about the masterpieces Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo so its bound to get enshittified because all they see is "profit from the weebs"

@strikeguysAlist Netflix might be thinking "Cowboy Bebop didn't really work, but people liked the next thing we made, One Piece. We've totally got this!"

Ignoring the fact that those two are completely different anime, and that Samurai Champloo is the same type of anime as the one they failed at adapting.

But it'll depend on who gets to actually write the thing. Maybe they'll get lucky and find a really good showrunner.

Dear God, why?
Not only is this most likely going to be trash but now we get to see what horrific chemical reaction occurs when Champloo meets current day weebs.

Can't wait to see more live action adaptations, I really hope vagabond will be adapted in to tv live action series how perfect as an adaptation will be.

Non transfareable license may or will include informal feedback loop as per TOS rules, granted by non transfareable license.

You may not read non transfareable licensed threads other than...Voluntary engagement. I"m DRM Fan, the biggest DRM fan of them all...

I wonder which chromium is the best chromium, I don't know which chromium I like the most as let's see... late win10 and win11 UI's are internet websites wrapped in chromium, steam website wrapped in chromium, spotify site wrapped in chromium, minecraf launcher uses webview 2 and cef which are both chromiums, 99% of browsers are chromium, egs/EA app/ubisoft connect are websites wrapped in chromium, in game overlays are websites wrapped in chromium, PWAs are chromium. So I wonder which I like the most🤔

Watanabe couldn’t stomach what they did to Cowboy Bebop so now he’s actually attached to this, so maybe there’s a fighting chance for it to not be complete ass.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

Take me back to the days before MAL became infested with Twitter's favorite buzzwords.

We can discuss about it, but in the end we just need to hope they've learned from their mistakes and create something that's at least something we are able to enjoy. But still, I don't think it's a good idea, because what's the point of a live-action remake? It will cost millions, which could be put into original work.

Nonetheless, I'm looking forward to this. The fighting scenes could look really awesome if done right.

@Old_School_Akira They're probably trying to make live-action adaptations of old hits for the sake of nostalgia after the success of the One Piece anime.

Would they actually cast Asian actors or just dress up white and black males like samurais? I won't be able to handle that cringe.
