This felt much like a carefully composed overture. One instrument playing are the flashbacks to Violet’s past, like the first tremors of memory arriving in fragments the way trauma does. By running as a secondary thread they help establish our heroin with a thoughtful pace, and fashion the world building more naturally. The contrasting starkness of war serves to paint the hopeful dawning of a new age, a society trying to speak in gentler languages.
