I found the last couple episodes that focused on Lara and Mari to be a little flat for my liking so getting an episode focused on Kota and Lisa was refreshing and important to the narrative this show is putting forward. She didn't get the romantic treatment and the conveniences right off the bat that Lara got, the capturing definitely painted an even stronger negative image of humans for her, and being used as a tool/sideshow isn't the best feeling. It's fairly justified. She still did care for her family though, and Kota's loyalty also left a deep impact on her too, even willing to gain legs just for Kota to be by her side. Just knowing about her past and what led her to who she is today in wanting to stop Lara from ever loving a human was interesting, and understandable from her side (even if a bit predictable). The after-credits scene was also different, but expected to be honest with a lookalike of the prince that Lara was previously in love with showing up, having Lara lose control a bit of her emotions and exposing her mermaid legs in public with Mari there. I'm not a fan of bringing the prince lookalike back to be honest, but it was expected given how obsessed she was with him in the past and having a new version of that prince to cause conflicts of feelings with Lara inside, and Mari potentially with Lara maybe gravitating away from her. It's cliche, but based on the inspiration with the series, it's on brand.
@animejas you're a little too certain about the nature of relationship between Lara and Mari.

It's no wonder why Lisa hates humans. Someone in the comments really guessed it right before that Kouta is the Anglerfish who accompanies Lisa.

The Witch is a bitch !

Prince Arrives but more than that what shocked me was Lara turning back into a mermaid LOL
Did Mari punch her again to knock her out ?!

@Maou_heika They are pitiful. I mean the anime isn't labelled as Yuri, yet they wanna force it to be Yuri without respecting other people's taste.
They are plenty of yuri works out there.
Not every works need be yuri and not every friendship between females needs to be yuri.
@Raizer007 Buddy, have you seen the official art?

This isn't friendship. Also director said it would be yuri so stop trying to force your own stupid agenda. Just go watch something else if you don't like yuri.

@RAfe87 You make a good point; she has mixed emotions. After all, she did love him. It's not like she hates him, but it's still traumatizing in some way. You can have mixed feelings about someone.

But I think it being mixed is the point, and Mari will still end up being her true love. I don't think it being abstract was the point, because it seems Lara already started to understand that the connections with others are important too in ep 5. The emphasis on the two's relationship is just too much, and the Ep. 3 ending scene had some serious romantic vibes.

Well, that was an unsatisfying follow-up to last week's fantastic cliffhanger. I just don't feel anything for Lisa or her fishboy Kota, and the way the story has written her into opposing Lara makes little sense. Their sense of superiority over humans dulls the impact of the impending tragedy---I almost want the two of them to dissolve already. Grace is also seemingly just evil for the hell of it, I guess. Hard for me to connect with this episode.

@Iamthewalrus8002 The director didn't say it would be Yuri, the opposite in fact, the actual quote is that this won't be a "typical Yuri story", nothing else. Mind you, I think that Lara is most likely to be with Mari because it's weirdly late to introduce another option, but saying that the director called it Yuri is a total misquote.

oh Lisa!! the difference between you and Lara's experience of humans truly sets the tone for the 2nd half of the series!! And the suffering she faced at the hands of humans, compared to Lara's love for them,, how bittersweet their future relationship will be! The light from Lisa being snuffed out, while Lara's still shines!! How they both lost their rings, Lara due to Mari - someone who cares for her - and Lisa due to those who she rightfully hates. And the whole thing about Lara being the 'chosen' princess, while Lisa is left behind to wait for her, all while giving up her identity!!

The colouring of the episode is as always gorgeous!! The contrast, the quality, the details!! The great blue and red tones that dominate the entire thing!! How beautiful the art is! The red of the future (Lara & the sun) and the blue of the past (Lisa & the sea - you could even say the absense of light). Lisa having to rely on the blue (fake) light to survive as even the blue of the potions lose their efficiency! How you can see her time is 'up' yet Lara's time / the future's time has finally come.

The meeting of Lisa and the witch is sure to be fantastic as well!! Both Lisa and the witch have been weakened, yet rely on Lara's hope for the future!!
How I love you Sayonara Lara!! Please bless me with a future where this show shines brightly in my future!

+The blue sky when Lisa meets the reincarnation of the prince to show how she's stuck in the past!! His and her blue eyes meeting, despite her turning more red / gaining her red tail (aka being part of the future), how the past and future collide! And how the present is an amalgamation of those two!

This show is truly something special. Every episode is excellent and the plot keeps getting better. I love all the characters and their backstories.

On the other hand, I was really hoping they would subvert expectations by not introducing another "prince", or an unnecessary romance subplot for Lara, so that post-credit scene is concerning. It's been fun witnessing the connections she's formed with the people around her and how Lara is growing as a person through them.

Based on how good the writing has been so far, I'm trusting they won't choose to follow the generic romance route that ends up resolving the conflict.

Beautiful episode as always, but I'm not really sure what Lisa wants to do?

If I understood it right, Lara needs to find true love for everyone's light to be restored... Why does Lisa say, "why won't Lara share her light with us," or something along those lines? What does she expect Lara to do? Does she not know how it all works?

And if Lisa is worried about her own life (and Kouta's life maybe), then maybe it isn't such a good idea to try to harm people in Lara's social circle?

It's all very vague, and she just comes across as mysterious and antagonistic for no good reason.

Hope they clear things up a bit next episode.

But Lisa has legs herself. Why is it such a huge problem that Lara has legs, and not her?

Also, what does it matter that Lara chose to have legs? Maybe think about not dying and turning into bubbles first, and deal with legs later? Does she think Lara remaining a mermaid is somehow going to save her and everyone else?

@perseii she thought of having legs more as a sacrifice, i recall shes more ashamed of having legs than lara had because she just thinks it was the witch's doing. shes beginning to learn that lara has more autonomy than she expected and the conflict is if she could accept her choice to find love with a human or not.

mermaids had never had that magical light thingy from a human before, shes not convinced if it would work with a human.

I knew it's this type of shit that Sayonara, Lara can pull after last week's heel. And seeing Lisa went for centuries being treated as a pet stuck for possibly years in that circus, she got saved by the anglerfish she and Lara once played with. So that's why Kota has facemasks with them all the time and it's cute how their lure protrudes from their back.

Still, it's understandable how Lisa absolutely despises the Witch and how their entire family are reduced to creatures stuck within clams struggling to stay alive (the sight of one of their sisters scared me). So it's Lara's choice to make since she holds the beat to the mermaids' futures. But damn, the Prince has showed up and Mari immediately understood, HOW HE SHOWED UP LIKE THIS AND LARA IMMEDIATELY GOES MERMODE.

Finally this anime got its story rolling. It may not be perfect and they may pull out bullshit by the end, but right now, it's interesting.

I interpreted Lisa’s line to mean “Why isn’t Lara’s love for me true love?” Grace says in episode 1 (at least in the English dub) that “true love is different from standard romantic love.” This has two interpretations: 1. You need romantic love greater than normal romantic love, or 2. True love doesn’t have to be romantic.

For a while, I thought they’d go with option 2 and have Lara’s love for her family be what saves them, but given the parts with Mari triggering the giant fish thing, I imagine they’re still going with option 1 (or option 2, but with friendship love… hoping for option 1 though). I think Lisa loves Lara more than anyone (maybe including Kouta) and she wishes Lara would love her back enough to trigger the light.

Her trying to destroy Mari was because she thought if it had to be someone else, at least have it not be an evil human. She saw what happened with the prince and the circus and understandably thinks all humans are evil. Plus, we still don’t have the lore of why the mermaids hated humans originally. Lisa cares about Lara’s safety more than her own life, so she’s willing to delay Lara’s light if it means protecting Lara from a human betraying her.

All just my thoughts/interpretations, of course. I hope you’re enjoying the show!

Interesting interpretation.

But Lara already loves Lisa as a sister - she cries when she learns Lisa is alive and is happy when she meets Lisa in person. I don't see how much "more," "truer" love Lisa expects from Lara. And how her actions (refusing to meet Lara, acting cold, threatening Mari) are supposed to help with her goal.

I don't think Lisa is asking Lara for romantic love. It's possible, I guess, but nothing seemed to indicate that. We've only ever seen them act like siblings. She seemed to have more romantic vibes with Kouta, actually ("you're the one who always found me").

---

Thinking on this a bit more, I'm starting to think it's actually simple: Lisa doesn't know exactly how all of this works. The king (?) didn't tell Lisa anything about the true love thing, only that Lara is basically their only hope. She believed that once Lara wakes up, everything will be fixed, and she got upset when Lara was just hanging out with those evil humans and seemingly wasting time.

I think the show is good, great even. I just got confused, and it's probably not the anime's fault, I expect it'll explain things a bit more later.

Agreed that Lisa does not have romantic love for Lara, nor does she want romantic love from her. I meant more “Why isn’t familial love strong enough.” Sorry if my wording had been confusing there. I got the feeling Lisa may prioritize familial love over romantic love, and that she didn’t get why Lara doesn’t. This interpretation is based on the idea that “true love” doesn’t have to be romantic.

That said, I also like your theory that Lisa may be in the dark about the full story! I don’t remember exactly what Rowan said to her in the flashback, but we know so little as the audience that anything seems possible right now!

@perseii Lisa wants Lara's true love to be familial love. It's already been heavily implied before - at the end of episode 3 when Lisa finds Lara's ring, she said "find us, your true love".

She thought that after being betrayed by a human in the past, Lara would come running back to her family, realizing that that was true love all along. It's the "safe" option, but it was a bit of wishful thinking on Lisa's part, cause their survival kinda depends on Lara finding true love. It's just a theory, but maybe the reason why true love can't be familial love in this case is the lack of acceptance and understanding. I mean, Lara's father literally threw her into a dungeon for getting too close to humans, and Lisa sent Kota to hurt/kill Lara's human friend. And while Lara still cares for her family, her quest to save them is largely driven by guilt. There are some serious unresolved issues there.

As to why Lisa made the decision to attack Mari and her family, it seems that she thinks humans will betray Lara again and feels frustrated that Lara is once again wasting her (and their) precious time on humans. It doesn't help that their father told her that their only hope is Lara fixing everything once she returns and put the burden of ensuring that it all goes smoothly on Lisa. Lara drinking the witches potion and bonding with humans again makes it look like she's repeating the same mistakes, not having learnt her lesson. There's also the fact that Lisa has been suffering under the influence of that potion for centuries, trying to survive until the day when all of them can finally be saved. So it's understandable why she's upset that her sister willingly drank the potion again "to find love".

Lisa doesn't think that it's possible for Lara to find true love with humans, and thinks that Grace is manipulating her. When Lara told Lisa that she took the potion because she needs to marry a human to save their family, Lisa basically scoffed and was like "oh, that's what the witch told you, huh". Lisa is probably right about Grace manipulating Lara to some extent. From the opening it seems that Grace also fell in love with a human in the past. And her sister was the previous "special princess". She is withholding truth from Lara.

With the way the plot is going, I think at the end neither Lisa or Grace will be correct about Lara's true love, and she will find her own answer.

OK, I don't remember that line. That would explain some things.

But I'm not sure why exactly Lisa would think this. Maybe because there are no other options, after literally every mermaid has died out/fallen asleep?

And as you've pointed out, Lara's family hasn't quite been the understanding, loving kind, either. A bit much to expect familial love from Lara after you murder her friends.

But yeah, we'll see soon enough.

It was an very interesting episode focused on the Lisa's past and Kota too (he was named this by her).
Because of her terrible experience, I think we could understand now Lisa's hatred of the humans.
After all, it seems like the witch is the mastermind behind all the evil plans. She was watching Lisa and Kota all the time, through the mirror.

But the final of the episode was more intriguing too... Lara sees the prince she met in past life and she's petrified and a human no longer.
Will Mari be able to save Lara, even after the latter returned to a mermaid? Or maybe Lisa will do something...

Now I really understand why Lisa truly hates humans. I'm amazed Kota and her managed to live for that long. You'd think that after a certain amount of time she would be fine with humans, but I guess her hatred runs deep.

Fuuuck, Lisa found out the witch is at Mari's hosue. I'm getting nervous. Fuuuck, the same guy reincarnated?? This isn't good. I was hoping that falling in love could be open ended and not directly tied to romance 😭

This backstory makes me fully sympathize with Lisa and that tenfold.

Imagine

- getting exploited and treated like shit by humans for so long
- having to manage not turning to foam for decades
- feeling the huge pressure of protecting Lara for decades

You finally see Lara awaken after a century to see her have human legs and being FRIENDLY with the humans she has 100% valid reason to hate.

I love Lisa and Kouta after this episode, i hope they don't commit to doing something stupid here.

Also that after-credit gave me GOOSEBUMPS, oh my god it's all happening now!! Mari's reaction though!!!
@Smudy Imo, I'm surprised Lisa didn't stop hating humans after she worked closely (or really used) the scientist to get the potion. Additionally, she's been working with humans and even teaching kids. But I can acknowledge that's not how racism works (not saying this is racism, but a good comparator I guess)

I was really happy to finally get some light on Lisa's story. This episode was brilliant, I thought! Sad, revolting, melancholic, and hopeful all at the same time. Now, her thoughts and feelings on humans make a lot more sense. Though I do wonder how she managed to spend a century among them and not make even a single friend, meanwhile her sister finds a whole foster family in moments! 😭

This is the episode that drew me in. Crunchyroll released the first half on youtube and I got invested.

I think it's the best episode so far BUT they are bending over backwards to include all the elements of the original tale by Hans Christian Andersen.

In his version mermaids have no soul, so while they live 300 years (dates are exact!) they turn into seafoam after. Humans however have the light of a soul in them and for a mermaid to become a REAL human she needs a human to fall for her and share that light with her.

Also the dagger. Japan LOVES that dagger and every depiction of the little mermaid they made needs to feature it even though in the original story it's a blink and you'll miss it event.

Is it weird that Kota is my favorite character now? Plz don't let him die by sacrificing himself to save Lisa or something, because he totally would do that. Also interesting that the potion doesn't only work on mermaids but on fish or other animals? Does it work on land animals too? Is there a potion that turns humans into mermaids?

OMG Lisa could actually be the real main character, she suffered for 200 years, got kidnapped by humans and never stopped working to try to save the kingdom and her family. I didn't expect Lisa's backstory to be that deep :o also that ending for Lara....

Lisa's backstory was very interesting but I hope she wasn't going to attack Mari and his family!

This episode is interesting, it seems like Lisa has been alive for a very very long time at this point. But it's finally coming to an end...?
This episode showed the reasons for her feelings well.
The witch is definitely scheming something, and the truth of Lara's presence is still a bit unclear.

Finally, an actually interesting episode. The fact that I switched to sub in the middle of it must have helped my enjoyment levels a lot, because why do the dub voicers for this sound so melodramatic and why does that little boy sound like a full grown man. I still have so many grievances with it. It's an interesting story executed haphazardly, so far at least.
