Lara still remembers her time with Mari. Those were previous memories. Lara really doesn't want to be alone. I mean, Mari did became one of her closest friends. This episode also really gives a bad impression of humans, at least for what they did to Lara's mother.

It was really an emotional episode. It has shown us how bad humans can be. The witch died. What a waste! How could they kill an interesting character like that? I have doubt about Lisa's words. I don't think Grace was actually evil. There's something more to it. Rowan has told about his wife's death by the hands of humans. This is the reason if his hatred. Humans disrupt their lives every time. Rowan has said that sword is actually Lara's light. It wants the life of someone Lara loves to return to its shape. It has now become something similar to the Little Mermaid. The mermaid was also tasked with killing the prince if she wanted to be alive. It's now confirmed Mari is actually Lara's true love. Some people will start saying it's yuri. Yuri lovers will sing the song of yuri supremcy. But this isn't yuri. Lara loves Mari as a friend and family member. They have become inseparable. This is pure love but not yuri. It was really painful to watch Luca and Mari searching for Lara desperately. But they couldn't do much. The lake area was under restriction because of the phenomenon. Lara called Mari for the last time to tell her not to come. But Mari will definitely try to find her. Yoshiya did a great job. He managed a boat. But the witch's familiar took Mari away. I really want the witch to be alive. I feel like there are too many things to know. How can they wrap up in just two episodes?

Well, here it is, all the resentment and hatred that the merman have for humans, and what better weapon to use than a big ass heart, knife of doom to suck up those souls so that the light needed for their survival is sustained... And now, we know Mari is the true love of Lara, the sacrifice that must be made in order to satiate Lara's own twisted heart and ideals, that she can't control, just yet, until the final moment type shit! I like where this is all going, the darker shift had a nice build up to it, as we now approach the final stretch of this one, now, what do we feed this hungry heart, love or more hate? Or is there the 3rd choice in which the heart disappears and no sacrifice has to be made, with only Lara vanishing... At least, the witch's familiar has some idea lol, that kidnapping at the end was funny and fuckt up at the same time lol! 10/10

RIP witch I guess. Still dont know if you were good or evil, or what your intent was. What a waste of an interesting character... And Mari being Laras' true love has been obvious from the get go...

The show's been a mild disappointment to me so far but this was a good episode, one of the better ones for this show in my opinion. You got a real glimpse of Lara's true love after all this time, as well as Mari's in some capacity with how desperate she acted alongside Luca to find her. For how much complaining she had about Lara's company at times, she does get lonely as she admitted and valued her presence a lot more than she let on. Lara, obviously caring for Mari, does not want to hurt her or her family further in the process by using her as a sacrifice to feed on the hungry heart of sorts but Mari is stubborn enough to act on her own and jump literally into her problems like with the end there. Were these developments predictable? Like the show, absolutely. But the execution was solid enough, and the visual spectacle expected from me for the next couple episodes of the show is high. Also got more of a glimpse to why Rowan found humans to be untrustworthy too, and the treatment of Lara's mother made those thoughts a bit justifiable to say the least.

ITSHAPPENING.GIF This is the confirmation i needed for Lara and Mari, oh my god, they dropped all the numerous subtleties and basically just spelled it out almost! Now seeing the eel pulling Mari underwater, we will definitely see it explain to Mari what's the deal with Grace. The whole phone call was pure desperate angst from the two...

The last 2 episodes ending on such cliffhangers is killing me!!! Also wow I hope Grace's death isn't permanent? Or at least that her character just ends this way? I hope the snake at the end symbolizes that her spirit is still there

Oh my god, how is Lara just now realizing that Mari is her true love? Go be with her, girl! I hate to see the both of you like this. And where is this "killing someone will bring your true light out" theory even coming from? Rowan pulled that right out of his tail! It would almost be funny if Lara did kill her true love and then nothing happened. But even then, her dad would probably not admit defeat and be like "well, that was not the one you loved, let's try again!"

@Andrzej2 oh here comes the cope. She can love Himeka, as she was also Lara's friend or even Luca if it's platonic, it could be her own family or the Otsus if it's familial love, it could be the bakery if it's humanity love. But it's Mari, added with the blushing scene that she hasn't shown to anyone other than Mari, as the dagger represents Lara's heart got summoned from Lake Biwa as she hears Mari likes her the way she is Also, Mari wants to be with her forever, to be more exact, living together with her forever.

Curious where this will go, but I have to admit that I didn't like this episode. Lots of assumptions, assertions, and random commands got thrown around that made it hard for me to believe or follow anything. The "magic" in this show feels like it's being made-up as we go, rather than some ancient truth or inner power that Lara has had all along or whatever.

“Who is the one you truly love?” AND IT SHOWS MARI, HELLO?? My yuri agenda has been vindicated, it’s never been any doubt in my mind this is the only logical ship here and barring some generational asspull, that looks like what we’ll get. But first of all, Lara has to be honest with herself about the pain and anger she harbors deep down. Girl, it’s ok, I’d be mad af if the person I fell for turned on me like that because of my race, that’s why we’re leaving men in 2026 😭🙏🏾 I do think her dad is clearly a little batshit insane if he thinks she’s just going to kill her true love and that’ll be the end of it. The person she currently loves is not the same as she did back then who betrayed her, so what would killing Mari accomplish? I think ultimately she’ll just have to accept she has those feelings, come to terms with them and move on from her past trauma. After learning that humans killed her mother, I can’t really be mad at the dad for hating all of them and talking about murder so nonchalantly, but that’s not who Lara is at all. “It’s fine that you cause trouble” compare Mari’s response to learning everything she’s learned about Lara to how the prince reacted when he found out she was a mermaid? Says all you need to know. Mari doesn’t even gaf about anything Lara’s hid from her, she just wants her in her life whatever the cost. That’s real love. Speaking of real love, s/on to Mari’s brother for best big brother of the year and getting a boat for them to look for Lara. I cannot wait to see how Lisa and Lara’s father react to seeing all these humans who would risk their life for Lara. Maybe that’ll make them understand why Lara couldn’t turn her back on them because they’d never turn theirs on her. Yes, there’s bad people out there, but I truly believe people at their core are good and hopefully her family will realize that and find another way forward.

That explosion scene at the start was magnificent. I don't know if I can trust Lisa's words about the witch wanting to have Lara's light to save herself. Also Rowan doesn't look good either. His hate for humans is immense and it seems like they have killed his wife too. When Rowan asked who Lara loves she could only think of Mari 💖 Seeing Mari looking for Lara and struggling helplessly broke me. This weird phenomenon on the sea linked to Mari's heart looks troublesome. Mari's brother is more understanding than her Grandma and dad. Luca, Mari and her brother was finally about to go to Lara after getting the boat but the witch's snake kidnaps Mari and takes her underwater. Are we gonna see a Mermaid Mari now ? I hope Lara doesn't have to kill Mari or anyone to bring her light.

I didn't think they'd start killing these mfs! Ding dong, the witch is dead, ig..... sucks; that was kinda rushed. I cannot even lie. The rest of the episode was fantastic; looks like my girl Mari is the true love! I'm so happy, jumped out of my chair when I saw that. Yuri supremacy goes on! Super excited for next week, another 5/5 episode.

@eksratu Agreed, there was alot of "mumbo jumbo jibberish" this episode about love and magic that didn't really mean anything or explain very much at all. It's fun to see the duality of man in action though; So many here who loved this episode, while I'd actually consider it one of the worst, if not *the* worst episode of the season. Especially if thats the last we see of Grace; talk about an underwhelming and pointless death to an otherwise interesting character who has been with us from the start, but who's motives and actions still hasn't really been explained. Fingers crossed she's still alive. If she's actually dead and we'll end up with a massive exposition dump about her past actions from her minion next episode, that would actually make me deduct a whole point in my final rating off the show.

The way they confirmed Mari is Lara's true love while Rowan was talking about Lara having to kill the one she loves was extremely haunting. The last phone call between Lara and Mari made me cry. They're both going through it right now. I was right to be wary of Rowan. From the moment he imprisoned Lara back in EP1 it was clear there is something extremely wrong with that guy. I guess it's a curse of the mermaids living for so long. As it was pointed out, humans live far shorter lives, so it's easier for them to "forget" as a whole. I understand why he hates humans if they killed Lara's mom, but Rowans obsession with never forgetting and keeping that hatred alive is extremely disturbing because it's clear he's putting it above the well-being of his daughters. It was obvious in EP1, with the harsh, unreasonable punishment Lara received. It was also obvious in EP6, with the way he was speaking to Lisa after being apart for so long - chastising her for having "hideous" human legs and deliriously talking about restoring the palace's glory. And it's extremely obvious this episode, when he selfishly orders Lara to kill the person she loves. This is definitely not helping Lara's self hatred. The supposed purpose of the dagger form of her light clearly made her disgusted with herself. Again, calling back to her bitter words from EP1, not coincidentally addressed to her father: "Father... "mermaids are beautiful and humans are vile", that's what you've always said. But it seems like that's not true. It was me... I was the vile one". We see in this episode Lara repeatedly trying to say something, but being unable to spit it out. Her father assumes that she's trying to apologize, and once again repeats that it was all humans fault. But I think what she was trying to say was something along the lines of those dying words from EP1. I believe Lara's father is wrong about the dagger, and I will die on this hill. Because of his prejudice, he is unable to see the bigger picture, and convinced himself that the solution is Lara killing a human. The dagger is indeed hungry, searching for the "true love" Lara seeks, sometimes even desperately trying to take it by force, like when it aimed for the princes heart, or when it tried to eat Luca whole. But that is not all the dagger is. We've seen it act to protect Mari - the person Lara truly loves. We've seen it helping Lara reach land in EP8. I think Lara was correct in describing that dagger as her own heart a few episodes ago. I believe the form of the dagger represents how Lara is subconsciously trying to protect herself emotionally, lashing out when she's desperate. It may indeed be vile in some ways, but it's far more than just means to an end in restoring the light. Wouldn't be surprised if instead of trying to eat Mari it will attack Lara's family to protect her. I'm not sure yet if Grace is really dead. But suppose the next episode will explain what her goal is. Judging by the opening, I'm expecting a backstory of Grace and Rigmor. I'm pretty sure Lisa is wrong about Grace wanting to kill Lara. But it does seem like Grace was aiming to kill Rowan? My guess is Grace realized that without the light being restored naturally, Mari would be in danger cause Rowan would want Lara to kill Mari. Which would also mean that she realized the one Lara loves is Mari... If that's the case, I wonder how long she knew? With her minion kidnapping Mari, I guess she has some sort of a plan. Speaking of which... what the fuck? I was not expecting Mari getting dragged underwater in the last seconds of the episode. This show is killing me with the cliffhangers. I need to know what happens next. As a side note: the focus given to the sound of the helicopter while Mari and Luca were searching for Lara made me realize something. We already heard that helicopter at the very beginning of the show, in the first few seconds of EP1 when the photo of Lara and Mari from the boxing tournament is first shown. It was a bit ominous, kinda unsettling that it was foreshadowing one of the darkest moments in the show... Also, Rigmor is a beautiful name for Lara's mom, seemingly a tribute to goddaughter of Hans Christian Andersen - Rigmor Stampe Bendix.

@PremKR Agreed. I'm all for Lara x Mari in whatever form it takes shape, but I'm wondering what the wrap-up will look like. @MinscS2 You and me both! This was easily my least favorite episode so far, and I was also surprised by the high buy-in and overall positive sentiment in this thread. Mumbo-jumbo is a major turn-off for me. And yeah, Grace's role in this episode felt anti-climactic and pointless in a really invalidating, unpleasant way. I'm expecting her to return and un-un-alive herself before the end.

What a tough ask Rowan has requested of Lara... I was certain that Lisa's opinion of Grace wasn't too accurate. Even with her sudden death and attempt to reach Lara. But King Rowan believing that Lara has to kill the one she loves to free her light can't be right. Lara and her light would be in no shape to restore a kingdom with such a tragic plan. I'm glad Yoshiya was able to get Luca and Mari to the island, but resolving this crisis is going to be tricky.

No way the witch dies just like that, I mean what was even the point of her doing that. She came to the place so desperately and blew that giant hole in the wall just to call out for Rowan then drop dead. Unless she knew Rowan would ask for something unreasonable from Lara, like killing her loved one, though we are told it was her power keeping him asleep so I still don't get it. Her minion will probably come up with a way to revive her next episode but if they don't I'd be very disappointed with her end. Anyway, we do get to see exactly why Rowan's hate of humanity runs so deep with the death of Lara's mother and the constant war and expansionism they so despise from humanity. Though it seems his hatred itself is more venomous to the merfolk no matter how justifiable it is. I mean, he interprets the giant whale/dagger thing to represent Lara's unrest and unrequited love and the need for her to act on those feelings and kill her loved one today, but I just don't see that to be the case. I think he's right that the last exchange she had with the prince that ended with his rejection and disgust did lead to the dagger whale as a form of hatred or frustration with humans, but I also think it runs deeper and represents Lara's hatred and disgust with herself. I'm not smart enough to say whether it stems from her form of a mermaid, her disgust at being taught to hate humans, or being rejected by the one she loved, maybe its all of them, but I think that is what is going on. I mean, the dagger has even acted to defend Mari before rather than just being purely violent and oppressive in nature, so it has to be deeper than just 'this thing represents the need to kill.' While its great that Lara realises how much Mari means to her and that she truly loves her, it seems to me that this show won't end with a simple romantic true love saving the day. I think Lara will need to learn to truly love and accept herself first, a goal which her family is currently hindering. She obviously loves both the merfolk and the humans, but until she can live peacefully with both, something they'd never go along with, she will never really find true love. So, interested to see where it goes next episode.

We didn't even get to hear her argument except for some in ep 1. Only from Lisa and Rowan. Killing her off just like that would be really bad writing tbh. Also the backstory Rowan told Lara doesn't make sense in certain parts. Like, what exactly happened that made humans kill her mother. He just says they did because they are evil and nothing else. The op also implies a deeper backstory with her and Grace. They seem to be dancing together (I just guess the other blue haired mermaid is just Grace before becoming a witch). But we also see the other mermaid (presumably Grace) dancing with a human. I made a further theory on that last week, you can find it under the discussions tab. |

I think Lara will need to learn to truly love and accept herself first, a goal which her family is currently hindering. She obviously loves both the merfolk and the humans, but until she can live peacefully with both, something they'd never go along with, she will never really find true love. So, interested to see where it goes next episode.
I also don't think Grace dies just like that. And I don't think what Lisa is saying, about Grace's plan, is true.
I think there is more to her.
@SusFishEnjoyer I read what you wrote in the other discussion, nice theory. I wasn't paying much attention to the opening so its cool that you pointed that out, the witch's intentions seem to make a lot more sense now. Looking forward to hearing more about her story next week hopefully, but I'm starting to wonder how they're gonna bring the show to an end in just 2 more episodes.

I want to believe that Grace's intention in having Lara seek true love was precisely to purify that dagger born from unrequited love, which reacts the way it does precisely because Luca resembles the prince and was her unrequited love, and that's why she wants to kill him, while with Mari, the dagger reacts as a form of protection...

First you should know what actually yuri means. Not always love between two girls indicates yuri.

We actually got confirmation from this episode that Mari is Lara's true love. This has been teased multiple times, especially ep 3, but now it's actually confirmed. And I know some will love that, while some will hate that. Especially looking at some comments in this discussion or other social media. Although Mari is definitely now confirmed to be Lara's true love, I am not actually sure how close it will get to actual Yuri. it could be full on Yuri (100% confirmed by the characters confessing romantic feelings), but it could also be the "really extremely close friendship" route. Because it was actually confirmed to be GL early on, however GL not just strictly include Yuri, but also really close friendships between girls. It could also go into the direction of definitely implied Yuri, but not fully confirmed. Good example for something like this is Lycoris Recoil. So more like the "open to interpretation" route. I know some were sure it will be 100% confirmed Yuri, since early on, but I am not sure yet

Father has to be bullshitting. He's too biased and hates humans. That's why I don't believe what he said about Lara's light to be true. Allegedly Lara has to PIERCE and therefor KILL Mari. Lara would rather die. But how can this make a change? Last time, Lara saved the prince instead of letting the "heart" pierce him - this lead to her turning into foam. If Lara does the same thing with Mari, she'll turn to foam yet again. But this time her feelings are genuine. There has to be a way that doesn't involve cold blooded murder! True love has to make a difference. As for Yuri shippers, it's kind of sad really. There's 0 romance in this and I actually pity people who see Lara-Mari relationship as romantic. Not the first time though. Tells you a lot about their community in general. No social life and no interaction with actual humans must be the case. I keep bringing up "Frozen". Do you people think "Frozen" had incestuous romantic relationship between sisters? Average yuri fan is that far gone. Final scene of Mari getting dragged under water shouldn't be funny, but made my laugh a lot. "Took you long enough". Fingers crossed for a good ending. 2 episodes to go. I suppose the next one will end with a cliffhanger too.

The reveal about Lara's mother's fate makes me think this would have Grace be Lara's aunt on her mother's side, which Disney's plans for supposedly were mostly concealed or lost in production decisions

Average yuri fan is that far gone. There are things that can be interpreted as different types of love, and ambiguous ending is not off the table yet, but saying there is 0 romance hints between Lara and Mari just ain't true, and the jabs at people who notice those hints are uncalled for. Kinda hard to write off Lara blushing heavily at Mari's compliment in EP3 as sign of platonic/sisterly love. And it's not like it's just a passing moment of no importance, it's literally when Lara's "heart" bursts from the lake - a crucial moment, signifying intense emotions connected to the meaning of true love. I would argue that blushing in this context is a very obvious sign of romance. There's also subtle signs of jealousy/discomfort from Mari recently - from the moment Lara returns from the fireworks and grows closer to Luca, Mari gets kinda weird when talking about it. She keeps awkwardly asking "is this the true love you're looking for?". During their talk before sleeping in EP9, when Lara reveals she plans on confessing to Luca the next day, there are long pauses in Mari's replies that create tangible tension of "something ain't right". There are also visual cues, like her eyes being purposefully obscured by the frame when she tells Luca "You two seem pretty good together" - suggesting that she might not be genuine. Not to mention that the dramatic framing of the question "who is the one you love?" in this episode, combined with Lara's struggle over the course of the show to realize that truth until being directly confronted about it in dire circumstances is basically a classic romance trope. |

Weird and kinda annoying episode. Now the goal isn't to find true love, but to kill the true love..? First of all, why? How does that work? Why didn't Rowan say this sooner? Rowan obviously can't be trusted, but then why would he tell such a weird lie? What is the show trying to say here with this idea of killing someone you love to save your people? The witch became... something, and tried to do... something to... Rowan (not Lara?), and then... died. For some reason. But also maybe she's not really dead? And it turns out she was bad all along. But maybe she wasn't? Huh? A lot of info dump through sitting and yapping. So Lara's mom is the previous princess that restored the light. Did she kill her true love, too? Why did she get killed? What's that got to do with Lara's situation? Other than "humans are bad"? Also, that last phone call between Lara and Mari was very frustrating. Just tell Mari that they're going to kill her if she sets foot on the island. What's up with this "I don't want to see you anymore" crap? You tried that already earlier. A lot of good it did. The story seems to be leaning towards Mari being Lara's true love, which isn't out of left-field, but hasn't been set up that well, either. It'll heavily depend on how they develop this further. eksratu said: The "magic" in this show feels like it's being made-up as we go Feels that way. I've been mostly on-board until this episode, just a little frustrated with how they were keeping things vague and mysterious, but with such odd and rushed explanations they're losing me. Things might still work out in the last 2 episodes, but I'm kinda worried.

THIS EP WAS SO GOOD AND SO FULL OF ANGST TOOO, MY GOODNESS Lara's father is right partly, yes Lara has to have conviction, but not to kill Mari, just to marry her ofc (kinda joking). I wish there was a bit more buildup between Lara and Mari because even though it was a slow buildup it completely went out of the picture when Luca showed up aside from a few small moments, tho i do like the addition of a plotline of a love that isnt genuine, just kinda sucks when its had almost as much focus as the actual genuine love of the show. The ending was rlly funny, I do hope we get some of the Witch's backstory and I dont doubt we will but im a bit more concerned on how this will all wrap up in 2 episodes especially bcs they might elaborate on Lara's mother too, hopefully the last episode is like double length or something. I would say that Mari x Lara didnt have to be romantic but ever since Luca x Lara was spun to be romantic and failed, im pretty sure we're gonna see that fully happen with Mari X Lara now, hopefully they get some happy slice of life scenes together after all this is over. Im a bit confused on the helicopter being shown.. i thought that's how Mari and Luca would get to the island but at the end of the ep they're gonna take that boat, so was it just shown as an alternative solution they weren't thinking of or is it gonna come back later somehow, maybe for their escape from the island???

I don't really believe the witch is dead—they didn't show the snake for nothing—and I still don't consider her a villain; she's more like someone who went against the system. As for Lara, it seems she's chosen yuri, even though that was clear almost from the start. I'm looking forward to next week's spoilers :)
