I've been a huge fan of this show for a long time. Tanya is still one of the most entertaining characters I've seen and genuinely single-handily made the show one of my favourite guilty pleasures to rewatch. The story is not that complex, nor are the characters, however (and maybe because of that exact reason) the harshness and insanity of the premiss, together with great animation and crazy action are what S1/Movie focused on and really stood out.

Now almost a decade later the anticipated sequel arrives and is... fine?! Don't get me wrong the season is good. Good world building, major character developments in the Generals, limited but decent showcase of the struggles to balance politics at home and war and the highlight of the season was the Tanya and Zettour's insane gamble!

But it feels off, something feels off, I don't know if is the pacing and direction of the story which feels at drift, I don't know if is the downgrade in both action and animation quality, or the main aspect that I suspect, which is the disappearance of harshness and ruthlessness from both the show and Tanya herself, feels less serious and brutal than S1/Movie. I feel like absolute banger videos like Black Air Force Tanya wouldn't be possible this season due to the lack of great, memorable moments.

So I wanted to know, since the MAL score (which is not really a good metric but for a feeling of the community is fine) is still pretty high, and I haven't heard much this topic, if I'm the only one that feels something is missing.

Edit (24h raincheck): From the thread it does seems to be a me thing, as people are enjoying Tanya becoming more complex and better written, and not just wanting more of S1, which is what I was expecting hence the disappointment. Good replies I'll respond to a few more but can't get to all + some I already reply in another person's.

A shame it isn’t hitting for you as much, I’m personally loving it and feel like a favorite is back and is as great as ever.
I also disagree about your point regarding the production, I think it’s at least as good if not quite a bit better than season 1, which was very inconsistent honestly, it’s not as great as the movie sure but I feel like that’s to be expected.

While I understand why many fans felt lukewarm about Season 2 compared to the intense, war-centric tone of Season 1 and the movie, I actually think this shift was a necessary and brave choice.

Most anime—whether shonen or seinen—tend to rely on constant escalation: bigger explosions, higher stakes, and faster pacing. Season 2 takes a step back and avoids that trap. It slows down to address what most war stories ignore: war isn't just about tactical victories and battlefield action; it’s about diplomacy, logistics, human cost, and finding a way to stop the bleeding.
Instead of treating war as mere backdrop for cool action, the show actually takes its premise seriously. We get to see how the conflict affects Berun and the rest of the world, pushing nations into a corner where a white peace is no longer politically viable. It paints a grim, realistic picture of total war where destruction becomes the only remaining outcome—setting up what will likely be a catastrophic explosion if a third season is announce.

That said, I completely share the disappointment when it comes to the secondary cast. The season missed a huge opportunity by keeping its focus almost entirely on Tanya and the top brass. I would have loved to see these political, human, and philosophical themes explored through other perspectives:

- The side characters and unit members: Giving them actual screen time and depth beyond being functional cogs.
- Other nations (the Federation, the Allied Kingdom): Expanding on the spy subplots and geopolitical motives instead of glossing over them.
- Mary Sioux: Exploring how she envisions peace versus her obsession with vengeance against Tanya.

The way they handled characters like Hilda showed how well this approach could work, and I wish they had expanded that scope.
Overall, while it might not hold up as a pure action spectacle like Season 1, Season 2 remains a remarkably intelligent season. It moves beyond "trench warfare in an alternate universe" to deliver a genuine critique of war, political paralysis, and human nature.

I definitely loved the first season more, but I think the introduction of it all has something to do with that. As far as the animation and storyline goes, it’s on par with the first season in my opinion. This is an overall well done show. The wait definitely can cause someone to have higher expectations, but I’m not sure if that’s most people’s problem.

I'm loving it.
It has this grounded feel and is actually a struggle for Tanya as it was supposed to be.

If you want non-stop action go rewatch the movie.

this season is a perfect progression of what is the inevitable outcome of their self-righteous, victory hungry and megalomaniac driven war put them all in during season 1. It catches up to them and they will bleed off somewhere until it becomes everywhere.

War isn't only fought on 1 battlefield, it's fought in round tables by the bigshots in military and fought in round tables by the politicians.

@betaweeb Yeah I mean movie quality will always be hard to reach as a series, and I do think they delivered the animation quality of season 1 in some important moments, specifically the Zettour/Tanya debacle, which might even be better, and it can be that since there is less action seems less impressive in terms of animation quality (like Tensura has pretty good animation overall, but the meeting season felt way less produced than what the show delivers), but I feel I was way more impressed by a 10 year old S1 than this last season, when animation (for big shows) keeps getting better and better and just feels Tanya didn't get the same love. I feel similar to Overlord which I think deserved but didn't get more love from production committee along the seasons.

@Ground_01 Let me just say that I fully agree with the escalation trap in Shounen and is my bone to pick with many, specially the Big 3 which all suffer more or less from this... and the most egregious is maybe Dragon Ball - which were all 4 my childhood but there is always a need to go higher with powers and action.

And reading your enjoyment of the political and complexities of the series, shows that maybe it is, in fact, just a personal thing for me. This because, as I said, I do like the setting and world that Tanya takes place and the cast works really well (Isekai Quartet with them all is a banger) but for me that has always been in the background of the action and entertainment that is Tanya saying that we can blow them up cause they are Commies and shoot an videoclip after or smoking people left and right.

And to your point the show might have improved due to this approach as an overall show, but I guess for me is like (sorry for the analogy but is the most extreme example) if Solo-Leveling started to care about world building and character development - shoutout to Ye: I like some of the Solo-Leveling fights... what the fuck does he know about characters.

I think it's because of actions & fights. In season 1 & movie, the Frontline was shown. But in Season 2, it became deplomatic. I think this is necessary as it really shows how a war can destroy nations.

@ICenturyI i don't know, i rewatched season 1 not too long ago and i really can't agree, especially when it comes to the production.
i feel like all these shows have their own unique circumstances. for instance, i agree about overlord's production, but when it comes to slime i felt that seasons 2 and 3 both were a major step down from season 1, but this current season feels like a return to form.

regardless, even if we can't agree, i respect your opinion and hope that future tanya content will be made and be more to your liking.

Reading replies in this thread baffles me how braindead people have become and can't enjoy something without action, flashes and explosion every 5 seconds.

I personally enjoy 2nd season even more than Season 1. While Season 1 was fun, Season 2 feels REAL even in modern days, especially if you live in a country that has "action" similar to what's happening in this show. Season 2 is dark, gritty and real. For half of the season I can relate to almost every discussion characters had and understand that feeling of being helpless, being "chewed" by the system, and losing your mind, just because someone decided to play a Being X.

If you don't feel this season - consider yourself lucky and enjoy peaceful life.

@twodtl Fair point and I already recognized in one of my answers above that some people really enjoy and wanted Tanya to be a more complex and better written show than just action and flashy explosions. I just think that never was the strong suit of the show and so I guess I got caught off guard by the change of nature of the season. And that's fine and the reason I made this thread to understand if is a me thing which, from what I can see (except a minority), is the case.

But like I said previously, if Solo-Leveling started investing into character development and a proper story, it would seem, and make to a certain extent, the show better, but the thing is I watch, and what made the show stand out from all others is because they know what they are good at (flashy fights and spectacle and aura farming) and put all their chips into trying to be best at it (and you can argue that even then they didn't succeed), and if that complexity/development started to impact the action and fights then the show just wouldn't stand out as much because for that I go watch something else that's way better at doing both like Vinland or 86.
And the same can be said in reverse, if 86 started focusing on comedy and flashy battles instead of its characters which are what makes it great than I feel like I would have a problem with that too.

As far as the not feeling it because I enjoy a peaceful life is not really entertainable not only because I feel strongly towards other shows of similar themes, but my point exactly is that if you like and want to know what real war and the politics of it are, about WW1 even specifically, then there are a myriad of other shows that do it waaay better (anime or not) than Tanya because their entire reason to exist are those theme and don't have to waste budget or make it about action and flashy explosions.

And who knows maybe if Tanya keeps focusing on the more complex topics it'll eventually be a reference show that I'll be recommending for someone who wants to learn what war and the struggles of wartime politics are.

@ICenturyI 86 does a worse job than Tanya as to portray the grits of war. I haven't read the Tanya LN but I have read past what 86 adapted in the anime.

The point is that if Tanya had her actual way, the entire show would be even slower than what here is shown, because her objective has always been "get out of the frontline and live comfortably as a paper pusher on the back".
The only reason Tanya launches nukes is because she want to avoid actual fights. The point of Tanya using artillery is because she doesn't want to be there personally.
The only reason Tanya became the Devil of the Rin is because she wanted to use it to be given a comfy place back at the capital.

As Tanya goes up in the ranks and the higher-ups get a better and better opinion of her, the less action the show will have, **as it should**. Yes, X will throw some conflict here and there if she deviates too much of her "penance", but you can't make him throw a battle every 2 chapters or it'll become a deus ex-machina that people will get tired of. Instead, minimal pushes and leaving the world to do the rest makes for organic conflicts more enjoyable to follow.

If SL tried to do this it'd fail because is a power fantasy based on Chad MC can't do no wrong and watchers reeee at the concept of flaws or someone not automatically fawning over the self-insert. Is fast food and nothing wrong with it, but you need to understand the underlying idea of each story.
Also, flashy fights... eh I won't open that can of worms, but already the Beerus fight was more lines than anything, and from this point onward fights get less and less impressive, a lot of times being one panel spread and nothing more. Either A-1 goes original filling them, or if the Beerus is one of follow you'll get nothing better.

I like the new season but I was expecting the same as the first one. I don't like how Tanya feels more goofy than the badass cruel 1st season Tanya. I like the development of the side characters but eeeehhhh it could've been better.

No matter what, i just hope there won't be another 10 year break and that in 2-3 years we will get a new season.

@CorbanEsp I don't wanna be bogged down in the examples I gave since 86 is a good show that did explore more those themes than Tanya S1, but maybe less than what now S2 is providing so yeah it might be worse (or as I said Tanya is getting and will continue to get better). Those and the SL one are just to relay my vision of why I probably am disappointed with the season, which basically is some shows are just good at 1 thing but they do it so well they stand out (Demon Slayer being another example), and I thought Tanya would more or less go that route. That not being the case, by focusing on world and actual character development, in exchange for the action, it can make it a better show but also makes it harder to stand out imo.

Maybe this illustrates the best:

When people asked me what a good unwinding action show just to enjoy and have fun. Almost always Tanya would appear in there, is great action, one of the best characters in anime, pretty straight forward and simple and fun as hell to watch. Same with One Punch Man (we don't talk about S3 and kinda S2) or Demon Slayer or Solo Leveling.

Now I feel that it no longer fits that category and is more in the wave of 86, Tensura, Clevatess even, which are not the peak of their genre but are pretty good shows that one can enjoy but can't just turn the brain off and chill, you actually have to engage with it.

And I wanted/expecting Tanya to remain in the first group not the second, but as I said, if they do a good enough job maybe it can stand out in the latter, is just harder because even if is better than the examples I gave, they themselves are not the best. It's just that the pool and harshness of the critique is higher in those.

You know, I know a lot of people like it and I completely agree with everyone that the tone is fine. I kind of like seeing the diplomacy and the production is perfectly fine.

I think I do agree though on some levels that it's not hitting as much for me as say the first season or even the movies. and I do think what one of the people said is the main reason I feel a little "over" Tanya, the evil is because how long it's been to have each thing come out multiple years between movies and seasons even this one being 6 years later or something.
I feel I've just gotten bored with it and not just because it's slower. I actually don't mind that. I just think overall it's taken too long.

also one thing I really thought was going to be unique about the show was that since Tanya was reincarnated from our time, they were kind of going to be able to help influence and do a alternative timeline to what happened in our real world World war One World war II.
but now seeing how everything's going in this season it literally just seems like it's just going to end up like our world. Russia and England win with help from the US and hell, even in this one, Italy isn't on their side in Spain stays neutral.
it's truly even worst case scenario than what happened in our world. so I don't know. I just felt like I would have liked seeing Tanya being able to tip the scales or have something different happen. so it's just kind of like watching a documentary lol I already know how this anime is going to end and so for me I think I'm just done after this season.

I'll just go spoil myself on what happens from the light novel.

I feel it’s kinda necessary at this point to flesh out the world a bit and spotlight side characters so the audience can have a better understanding of what’s going on. It is a big payoff when you see Tanya kicking ass all over the battlefield but I have respect for the studio for slowing down the pace for some heavy world building that I imagine is leading to something real big either toward the end of the season or for future installments (which I doubt we’ll have to wait as long for going forward).

Solo Leveling was never about the story or characters - it was praised only for it's art, although at the same time Her Summon was releasing and I must say, despite SL being praised for "aura farming" art, Her Summon can legit give you chills with it's art which SL can't do. In fact, SL's story is so bad, the author was forced to remake the ending, and even the remake is still a piece of shit.

Of course there're better shows, I'm not arguing with that. What I'm saying is - the atmosphere, the dialogues and problems hit very close to home, it's like I'm reading daily news.

@twodtl For me, neither was Tanya, or rather I would've liked her to stay that way as shows like S1 Tanya there a not a lot that good and shows like S2 Tanya there are more and better imo, so from a standout perspective is harder to recommend/be interested. I think I explained it better on the reply to CorbanEsp so maybe you can see what I'm trying to express there.

Have to disagree. I like the direction its taking and think its the only one that makes sense after the end of the first season. I think we've seen enough of the frontlines and I'm really enjoying how its exploring the mindset of these nations at war and the politics and diplomacy that goes into sustaining a total war like this one. So I guess, both seasons were good, just different. I think its okay to prefer one over the other but I don't think either is better than the other exactly because it comes down to personal preference and they both kind of have to exist for this kind of story to feel real and grounded

I actually enjoy S2 more than S1.

S1 focused more on the action; S2 focuses more on the plot.

As others have said the focus is different but I think both are important to get the implications of the war without tunnelvision.
This makes it a better show than just kill the enemy without context of the factors that created the war.

For me in my top ten list for the season.
