The first season of this anime was rated +17, but it looks like the second season will be +13. This means they are making it for kids. Is the source material actually like this? Does the story get more childish? Or are they softening and CENSORING it just to lower the age rating, make it more marketable, and sell it to the CHINESE market and kids? I never read the source material, so I'd like to know if anyone knows if the story is truly like this, or if it's all just CENSORSHIP to sell it to a mainstream audience?

Okay first of all, I haven’t read the novel, but the only real difference in S2 based on the manga is that it will have significantly less rape scenes going forward from S1, it’s still dark don’t get me wrong, but the way it’s dark is going to differ. It’s not the fault of anybody deciding to cater to a broader market, just the author focusing more on the plot and world building. Also, what the heck does Chinese markets have to do with any of this? This is a Japanese show, other markets don’t really matter that much.

@MewsicMagic Dude, it feels like you've been living under a rock and have no idea what's actually happening in the world. Right now, there is a brutal censorship war going on globally. Japanese anime now makes more money internationally than it does in its own domestic market. That is why foreign markets matter so much today, which brings up the issue of trying to please absolutely EVERYONE In China, companies like Bilibili, Tencent, and iQIYI have been funding Japanese anime for years. This means Chinese corporations are paying to get Japanese anime made. On top of that, if you want to sell to China and make more money, you are forced to tone down the stories and make them more kid-friendly just to get them distributed there The exact same thing is happening in the West. A lot of people put pressure on payment platforms like VISA and Mastercard to block payments to Japanese companies that are deemed "immoral" by Western standards. Basically, this forces them to tone down stories and strip away all the adult content. In short, they’re censoring gore, fanservice, violence, and the like. It got so intense that even the Japanese Prime Minister had to step in. He pointed out that the global success of otaku culture is due entirely to the passion of creators, publishers, studios, and fans, not government intervention. He promised zero interference in creative freedom, acting as a shield to defend authors against external complaints or pressure. He noted that while people have every right not to consume the content, creators must have the freedom to create it. The real issue is that the production committees the ones putting up the money are the ones calling the shots. To boost sales and maximize profits, they will censor, infantilize, and soften any story to make it appeal to a general audience. The most famous and recent case is the third season of One Punch Man. Although it's supposedly a 100% adult anime, they went to the extreme of censoring Zombieman's cigarette because China bans any anime that shows someone smoking. And that's not to mention the blood, gore, or fanservice, which are censored even worse

@Mikkebak Exactly, censorship now happens during production, meaning that raw or 'problematic' scenes that make a story adult and mature are directly deleted, modified, or changed, meaning it is directly softened and made childish, that is the problem, the BLURAY can no longer reverse that, and besides the blu-ray is disappearing there is no economic motive there either The only thing that can save us from censorship is if everyone who watches anime is aware of that and rejects censorship in every area, only then is there hope

@Xcilionsial You do realize that it’s been very common to have different versions of a show/movie for different regions right? Even going back to the 80s and earlier. So what if China requires censoring something? They can censor it in the Chinese release of the show and leave it normal elsewhere, it’s really not something that should affect you unless you live there yourself. The type of censoring that’s happening in the world right now is quite varied, and realistically it shouldn’t affect this show at all just yet in most regions. More importantly was how you somehow missed my entire statement and went on about world issues causing the problem instead. The age rating for this season probably isn’t lower because of censorship, but rather because the story shifts its focus and the main thing making it have an adult rating, the rape scenes, don’t really show up in the future story content I’m not interested in a big censorship argument over this show, I’m happy that it’s getting another season, something there was no garuntee of ever seeing.

Really wish everybody here would just watch the anime when it releases and then compare it to the light novel before assuming they’re gonna dumb down the show for a younger audience. Don’t judge the show by its cover just yet.

@MewsicMagic It looks like you're the one who didn't get it, my friend. I'm not making anything up. Everything I'm telling you comes from important Japanese politicians who are saying exactly that: there's a full-scale attack and censorship pressure on Japanese entertainment. Just a few examples, and again, these are not my words: "The next requirement from credit card brands could be to completely ban novels or violent scenes. Some say that Japan should comply with global standards... But if Japanese content becomes too globalized and loses its unique charm, it will also lose its appeal and its demand abroad." "The government's support aims to assure creators that their freedom of expression will be protected, and that government backing does not imply that it will meddle or interfere with the content of their works in any way." "The global success of Japanese media is driven purely by the passion of creators, studios, and fans, not by government intervention. The State must protect our unique cultural freedom and not allow international pressure or foreign political agendas to censor, dilute, or alter the identity of our cultural exports." "Today, credit card brands demand the censorship of certain visual expressions under the argument of complying with 'global standards.' But if we give in, their next requirement will be to completely ban light novels or scenes of violence in video games. If Japanese content is altered too much to please those who manage foreign money, anime will lose the unique charm that made it successful in the first place." "Anime and manga are irreplaceable treasures of Japan. We will not allow external factors to dictate or punish the free expression and cultural value of our works in global markets." I repeat, this is what ministers, parliamentarians and politicians of the highest level in Japan say, If you think you're smarter and know more about censorship and Japanese anime than the Japanese themselves, then good for you, if you want to argue with someone do it with them.

Unfortunately, the majority of people who watch anime are ignorant, and the rest are simply passive, weak, or radical fanboys who accept anything they are given, no matter if the quality is trash, censored, or changes fidelity just out of greed. Only a few are aware and defend quality in every sense; it is unknown if the majority will ever react

@LordCrueltyV Yes, Crunchyroll uses the highest rating for all the other seasons regardless of whether they were toned down or made more childish, since all the seasons are grouped in the same section; it would be different if they were separated by season

@EcchiGodMamster The funniest thing is that because of scenes like that, the series becomes popular and people want to watch it. For the second season, they eliminate everything that made it good, and then it becomes an empty shell. In other words, without scenes like that, the series wouldn't have even had a second season since it would have failed with just season one

| @EcchiGodMamster The curious thing is that those who complain don't even watch anime; they are mainly activists and political or ideological groups. And I'm glad you mentioned it, because it was precisely since Goblin Slayer that I started hating censorship. Since then, any anime with censorship, poor animation quality, or that isn't faithful to the original material gets the lowest rating from me. And I've seen many others starting to do the same. Those who make anime while censoring everything won't stop until it hits their pockets, that's how the market works, and with that, let only those who don't censor anything succeed. | @EcchiGodMamster They don't care about the fans AT ALL, they see them as cattle, they only care about numbers, spending 10 to get 20. That's why they only learn when they spend 10 and get 5, and that is only achieved by not consuming bad products and burying them into irrelevance. OPM s3, a global anime, 100% for adults 18+, was completely censored in every sense to make it 13+, all due to simple commercial calculation. Luckily, it was rated as it deserved. The problem is that the other part is missing: not consuming terrible products either. Because if they deliver a bad product but it keeps being consumed for whatever reason, then they will keep making them just as bad since it works for them, so we consumers would be the ones to blame, and then it really would be GAME OVER. |

@EcchiGodMamster Fortunately, there are some signs that all is not lost. Precisely, the disaster of OPM Season 3 gave hundreds of thousands a clear example of what is bad, ugly, and horrible There is also the competition. China creates animation with extremely high fluidity (many of Japan's talents went to CHINA). The problem with Chinese animation is extreme and absolute censorship, plus the fact that most of what they do is in 3D. However, if Japan ends up censoring everything too, people will eventually prefer the Chinese market; if both are censored, they will choose the animation that is technically better (exactly how China surpassed Japan in video games) Korea is also entering the animation market and will become another competitor for Japan. Even though Korea also has extreme censorship on certain topics, they are more permissive when it comes to violence In the end, Japan will learn the hard way. If their animation is of poorer quality and no longer offers what made it unique, such as controversial themes, gore, being politically incorrect, etc. they will lose to the other markets. That is when they will react out of necessity and fear, but we are still many years away from that, and we will keep seeing many great level-8 stories on average destroyed by animations of level 6, 5, or less

Halfway through episode 1 now and jumped in here too see if the ratings had changed, then i saw this post, like i probably would not have thought too hard about it if it was like this from the start, but it just seems weird to swap on season 2, like who is starting with season 2 but they cant see season 1 due to age? Honestly while i dont need a full on gorefest, the fact that season 1 episode started with a wyvern slash that cut them clean in 2 and season 2 wyvern slash ruins the clothes on his back just takes something away from the show for me especially after having experienced it.

@Ugliz It sounds like a contradiction, and it is, but it seems like what they are doing is sacrificing the IP In other words, they no longer have plans to continue with more seasons or anything of the sort; they just want to monetize this second season as much as they can. Meaning, maximizing profits at the expense of the fans who watched the first season and will watch the second out of pure inertia. Maximum short-term profit while killing the story forever That is why they are lowering the age rating, to also be able to place it in a more accessible time slot and with more sponsors. Basically, "burning your own house down just to keep warm today"

This is not even skeleton knight you know anymore. It's not follow the dark fantasy tone from Ln and manga. Slavery dan dark undead theme with Gore. Just drop the anime, keep reading the manga or novel instead. Season 2 is filler, they added story that does not exist in both ln source and manga. It's censorship + too much fanservice.

This is looking more and more like a train wreck with breaking off the LM and Manga. Five episodes that come off like a western kids cartoon.

I rewatched season 1 and it was quite a nice rewatch, although lacking in some parts. But I liked the mix of maturity and ridiculousness. I never did read the source, but I still felt that season 1 did cut a lot of corners and watered thigns down though. But when I started season 2, I was shocked at the huge piles of bullshitting that is going on: - absolutely no human is is even able to BLEED anymore - of course absolutely no human can lose any limbs in fights - fire does not burn, it makes bandits sleepy - no human can die or get killed. Not the bad guys, not the raping bandits, not victims for dramatic effect. Only old people die, but talking about death of old people would be too scary, so don't mention this neither. - supposed rape victims / slaves don't feel that way at all when freeing. When freeing, they just happily stand up and leave, looking like they were just bored and slightly inconvenienced by the prison cell, since they had no cards to play inside. - the typical bath scene in which the female main character(s) enter a bath after the guy did lost all maturity and have the girls childishly just attacking the guy (you have seen that stuff many times before) And finally the reason that made it unbearable for me: - the noble laidy's poision tester does happily live after, after eating poisioned food meant to KILL said noble laidy. THEY COULD NOT EVEN KILL AN INSIGNIFICANT SIDE CHARACTER OFFSCREEN!!! That was at 6:20 of episode 2 and it was that moment when I could no longer bear that piling bullshit anymore. When that anime even steeps THAT far, then there is really just no hope that it can become even anything remotely decent anymore! ...Which is very disappointing, since I was really looking forward to watching this show... Well, I also did read up the comments of this topic and the political statements make a lot of sense, given the state and course of other shows. I have to disagree with the assumption though that things can actually change or return how it used to be. Corporates look at how to make money, not at how to maintain cultural heritage or individuality. If there will not something big and very significant happen to give a call of ,,this can no longer continue to go on" of some sorts, that forces people to uncompromisely resist the censorship, then compromises will be made until it all waters down into an even worse mess than what we even have now.... And if forced censorship of payment providers is not such a wake-up-call, then by any means I can not imagine what will be. Show dropped.

@Nekomotto The political aspect, globalization, and payment providers are indeed a serious problem, but they are not the main one, since they have ways to avoid or bypass it if they wanted to; the main one is simply money. The investors who put up the money to make anime only want to make more money and are looking for ways to do so. Everything else is the perfect excuse and fits them like a glove to do it; they mistakenly believe that this is how they will achieve more profit, when in the long run, it will be the downfall of anime The fact is that 85% of anime viewers are adults; only 15% are under 18 years old. And that 85% of adults rate anime as if they were children, you will always see the majority giving a 10, 9, or 8 to things with terrible quality or censored And knowing that the vast majority of viewers are adults, it is surprising that most of the stories are childish. Instead of making everything for adults, who are the main audience, they make everything for children Things can be fixed, but for that to happen, the majority of anime consumers must realize this and reject censorship and poor quality. They have to complain, protest, and punish those products; otherwise, they will keep doing it. "If nobody complains, why change it?" As an example, this very anime should have a rating of 4 or less and be unanimously rejected. However, there are still people who rate it well and watch it. It is a problem of education and lack of interest The way things are going, this will not change and will probably get worse over the next 10 years, from there maybe it will improve or even get worse

Oh wow, you predicted it. I really wonder why they toned down this season and decided to make it PG-13. I mean, even removing all the blood and violence. I can't think it's anything as simple as "card processors, censorship" or whatever. That's a problem, but I highly doubt they were obligated by some higher force to "clean Skeleton Knight up" as if it were a paragon of anime to begin with. I wonder if someone more familiar with Japanese broadcasting could add any thoughts on this.

@Eatsik Yes, I saw it coming even before the anime premiered. It’s not that difficult nowadays when quality and consistency no longer matter. And by the look of it, this is only going to get worse, as the vast majority keeps defending and supporting all kinds of anime, no matter how bad or flawed it is. I guess there’s too much blind fanaticism that won’t disappear so easily I would also like to know the exact cause, but that will never be known since what the Japanese actually do well is maintaining absolute and complete secrecy, where they never leak anything But the most likely cause is always financial calculation. Just like they lower the quality of an anime to save money, they also censor it to try to make more money. In the end, both things in the long term end up making them lose money; it's something that always repeats itself, and they never learn
