Why does everyone call him Elymas when his name is CLEARLY Elmyas? Do the subtitles overwrite what is actually being spoken or are people just dumb?

I think it might be a difference in pronunciation due to them possibly straight up translating it instead of transliteration just an idea so idk I've seen this often yeah who knows

It's either pronunciation or translation problem.

Japanese translation kind of skews the original word due to their lack of specific sounds present in the original language

Japanese lacks a natural L sound. Hence why “Engrish” exists as a concept. But the other example in this show is the fact that Luce is called “Ruche”.

A quick check to the database to know that his name is 'Elymas,' Romanji 'Eruma' could have prevented the manifestion of this thread =))

I'd assume that the pronunciation is more accurate than the subtitles. Anime episodes are usually made raw; translators have to add the subtitles for western audiences. That's why on certain sites you'll find there's a delay in the episode upload. The more anime you watch, the more you'll start to get the jist of certain words and phrases, in which you can tell that the subtitles a lot of the times will "fudge" the translation a bit - it's usually still accurate ofc, it's just you know what was actually said means "this" instead of "that".

Also sometimes character names are just different for the Western audiences, like Ash from Pokemon is known as Satoshi in Japan.

No one ever talks about how Ash was the original crypto bro….

@SgtBateMan I don't think you are as correct as you seem to believe

Why? Eruma is very much the correct romaji, if I were translating it I'd be tempted to go with Elma, but Elymas is an actual exiting name, which is in guessing why they went with it.

It's kinda a case of there being no perfect solution, I don't think elymas was a bad localisation.

If you want the most accurate understanding, learn Japanese, you just can't translate everything perfectly into every language.
