Digimon Tamers

Ten-year-old Takato Matsuda loves playing the Digimon card game with his friends and immersing himself in its imaginative world. One morning, he finds an unfamiliar blue card in his collection and swipes it through his card reader. Little does he know, his decision leads to its transformation into a D-Ark Digivice. When the mysterious device scans his designs for an original Digimon named Guilmon, it generates a Digi-Egg that later hatches into a living version of his own creation!

Although Takato is thrilled to have a real Digimon, his idealized fantasy shatters when he realizes that his rambunctious new companion requires constant supervision. Adding to his troubles, Guilmon is targeted by Ruki Makino, a rival tamer who commands her partner, Renamon, to gain power by defeating other Digimon and absorbing their data. Luckily, Takato finds allies in his schoolmate Li Jianliang and his sassy Digimon partner Terriermon to help him on his journey as a real-life tamer.

With sinister foes appearing at an alarming rate, Takato must strengthen his bond with Guilmon to protect both the human world and the Digital World.

Digimon Tamers is the third anime in the Digimon franchise, originally airing right after Adventure 02.

This season is definitely another highpoint of the franchise, with the main tamers being great, just like their partner Digimon, and with a story that becomes something truly dark and profound by the end - with the main antagonist being the most thought-provoking and sinister ever in a Digimon season.

As usual, the first arc of the story serves to introduce the setting, world and characters. It doesn't start off all that strong, but it doesn't matter, because the characters are a joy to watch, and the later arcs are really ... good - the last one being absolutely phenomenal.

Most of the important characters are only 10 years old, which makes the later story even more haunting. Tamers, at its core, is a story about destiny, how to overcome it and how to fight for the destiny that you desire. Renamon and Leomon talks about it, and so does Impmon and Juri later on. In this season, the Digital World is quite different, having a more mysterious and wild air to it, which is a nice change of atmosphere.

The evolution mechanics of Digimon Tamers are amazing; the card slash modifications are creative and fun, and the later Matrix Evolution, which combines the main characters with their partner Digimon to attain the highest level, is chef's kiss. The sequences are legendary just like in the first season, and the evolution themes are perhaps the best in the franchise, and really sets the tone perfectly. There's some magnificent Digimon designs, like Renamon's line in general, Dukemon, and Beelzebumon.

Even though there's no crests or digimentals this season, we're still taken on superb character arcs with our cast. The side characters like Shaochung, Hirokazu and Kenta are not as important, but they do have their moments to shine. I'd like to talk about the main characters though, namely Takato, Ruki and Jianliang.

While Takato is not exactly among my favorite protagonists in the franchise, he is a big step-up from Daisuke in the previous season. He is not very brave in the beginning, but by the end of the show, he is, and goes through character development by wanting to help his friend Juri, who is suffering. He can be a bit of a crybaby at times, but he is only 10, and the battles he has to go through are no joke, so it's understandable.

Jianliang is a great character. He's got this calm aura to him, and is more often than not level-headed and smart, but he is also a worrywart. His story is made deeper by the fact that his dad is a Digital World researcher who ends up collaborating with Hypnos. Towards the end of the story, Jian (as he is called by most) learns to embrace the parts of himself that are not perfect - often etched on by his adorable partner Terriermon, telling him 'moumantai' (take it easy).

Ruki is where we really get to the meat of evolution as a character in Digimon Tamers. She is also the only 'lone wolf' archetype who is female in any season to this day. She starts off as a very cold person, known by many kids in Tokyo as the 'Digimon Queen', since she is a master of the Digimon Card Game. She only ever thinks about winning and simply wants to be the strongest. She even treats her Digimon partner Renamon as nothing more than a tool she can use to get stronger. But after befriending Takato and Jian, she starts to open up, and goes through a journey of learning to be softer. She ends up caring intensely for Renamon and their partnership sometimes carries the story single-handedly, because of the deep trust between them, that makes every interaction a joy to be witness to.

Ryo is someone that joins later on and he is a fun character as well, albeit without as much depth as the main 3 and Juri. Being a bit older than the others, he brings a protective 'big brother' vibe to the cast.

Of course, Juri has to be mentioned too. She is happy-go-lucky in the beginning of the story, and seemingly isn't burdened by anything. But after her partner Leomon is killed (something the franchise seldom has dared to do to a tamer's Digimon), further trauma bubbles to the surface. Her mom died when she was younger, and now she is reminded of that. She becomes so depressed that the main antagonist of the season, the D-Reaper, uses that to their advantage, since they grow stronger from feeding off of her despair.

And this leads me to the D-Reaper. Truly a fascinating and terrifying antagonist. The D-Reaper is a digital program, originating in the Digital World, that gained sentience and wishes to end all life, both in the Digital World and the human one. This being can seemingly multiply itself endlessly and take many different forms, and sees humans as being toxic, hateful and undeserving of life. Furthermore, one of the D-Reaper's forms which are simply 'bubbles' delete anything they touch - which is pretty bone-chilling.

There's also Hypnos who I mentioned before, an organization of adult characters that in the start seeks to stop Digimon from wrecking havoc and is decidedly anti-Digimon, but ends up helping the main cast as well as Jian's father (and his old research team) with defeating the D-Reaper.

Among the Digimon cast, Renamon and Terriermon are super memorable, but so are Culumon, Leomon, Impmon and of course Guilmon. Renamon is a mature Digimon and gets great character development, in the beginning just wishing to be strong like Ruki, but has wonderings about life and destiny later on. Terriermon is sassy and unserious, and clearly likes joking around with the others, and he is unforgettable with his 'Moumantai' catchprase. Impmon goes through one of the best redeeming arcs in the franchise, starting off as an annoying pestilence, but ending up fully regretting everything he did to cause harm, and proceeds to help the main cast against the D-Reaper. Guilmon is adorably innocent and nobody can forget that cute voice.

The end of the show was a gut-punch and this many years after, I personally still hope for some kind of sequel.

In conclusion, Digimon Tamers is one of the best anime Digimon has to offer. With heartbreaking moments and times where you root for the cast, as well as awesome Digimon friends, this is a unique story I would recommend to anyone that is interested in anime, and in particular if you like monster shows.

Mixed Feelings

The intro song is so catchy and sets the perfect tone for the series. The voice cast is great, even though their performances could have been better. The concept is really cool, and the new Digimons bring a lot of excitement, but the pacing is a bit off.

The storyline feels a bit basic and familiar, but it's interesting to see the new characters and Digimons, especially Renamon's evolution line.

The animation quality is good, but not quite as impressive as Digimon 02. Some of the new Digimon skills are not that great, except for Renamon.

The pacing of the season is a bit all over the place, ... with a slow first half and a rushed ending. The sound quality is okay, and both the opening and ending themes are super catchy.

There are some good character developments, but some parts of the plot feel like they're overlooked as the series ends. The ending isn't as strong as in the previous seasons, probably because of the weak portrayal of the villains.

For someone new to the series, I might suggest starting elsewhere.

Basically, Digimon Tamers is a good show trapped within a horrible show.

The Good: The characters are quite well-realized and their growth is interesting, especially Ruki and the ties between her character arc and Renamon's powerset. Impmon was surprisingly engaging as well, and I enjoyed tracking the subtle development Culumon underwent.

Beyond that most characters, except the one-off monster-of-the-week baddies were fairly likeable; the adults were surprisingly well individualized and the side-kicks did not feel like they were wasting my time that often.

The overall themes present are ones I sympathize with, and they were explored with some nuance.

The general art direction was hit or miss; I liked ... the backgrounds, but the digimon designs range from pretty good to awfully overdesigned.

The bad: The problems with the show come down mostly to the technical stuff. The transformation sequences were too frequent and too lengthy, the animation quality in general was incredibly poor.

Beyond things like repeated transformation sequences, there were quite a few times when the show seemed to be wasting time; fights were padded and several episodes seemed like they weren't contributing to the plot in any significant way.

A lesser complaint, but the sound design was generally poor when it came to all the different growls and grunts the mons made- they very much sound like someone making an impression of something.

So, all in all, the show has many good things in it, but so much of it is wasted by poor choices in production that I could never really enjoy it; I watched it because I was interested in it, but with very few exceptions it was with the feeling that I "just want to be done with this".

If you have patience for the issues with presentation there is a lot to like, but otherwise I would recommend you to stay away.
