Saku Chitose appears to lead an enviable high school life. Extraordinarily charismatic, tremendously confident, and effortlessly friendly, he is the kind of person others naturally look up to. I’ve read some comments and reviews about Chitose in the Ramune Bottle, and some people say it feels pretentious, that the main character isn’t likable, and that he comes across as, “Yes, I’m 16, and I’m that deep.” I can see where they’re coming from, but I really love this show.

Interestingly, I felt the same mix of annoyance and affection toward the main character, Chitose. That’s what makes him compelling. If he existed in real life, I would 100% have a crush on him. In the show, he’s annoying and pretentious, yet adorable and lovable. By the end, he’s still just a human being—not perfect, ... not untouchable.

This show feels like it’s made for people who appreciate poetry. It’s dreamy—the choice of words and the way events are presented give meaning to life in small, subtle ways. It feels realistic in a way that paradoxically makes it feel slightly unreal. Yes, he’s 16 and remarkably thoughtful—but that’s the point. The show condenses the essence of teenage life, with all its drama and small triumphs, into a concise narrative, and it shows a character who is, in a sense, “perfect” yet still human.

Some people say they don’t understand what this anime is about. For me, I chose to take it at face value. The show tells you what to feel; it doesn’t force you to overanalyze the writing or the author’s intent. Yet it remains mysterious, because this clarity—this sincerity, bluntness, and honesty—is rare. The emotions it evokes feel genuine, like real life. In reality, we often don’t see the point in analyzing everything. We don’t try to understand everything because we know we can’t. Expecting to fully comprehend life or art isn’t realistic.

I would like to say that even the art style of the animation is atmospheric and gives that feeling of an artsy product and sensibility.

Chitose in the Ramune Bottle is not a mimicry of reality; it is a piece of reality that we get to witness. To me, it’s a masterpiece.

Mixed Feelings

This show was such a mixed bag for me. I will say the last three episodes that were delayed until recently did show me some promise as to why the LN has such a following, because they were easily the best episodes of the series so far (mainly because it actually involved our protagonist on an emotional level), but not only can I neither ignore the first two arcs of varying quality nor the other glaring issues the show has. But maybe let's start in the beginning.

Conceptually, this show isn't something you have never seen before. Basically every arc revolves around one character that is ... close to our MC, Chitose. In the first arc, it's a classmate that becomes part of his friend group, in the second one, it's about one of his friends who gets stalked and in the last one, it's about the Senpai that he adores. The main idea, how this show wants to be different from others in this genre, is by not making Chitose the typical introvert type, but the cool guy at school who already has a literal harem of girls not only following him, but who even confess their love towards him which he always refuses. However, I feel the author thought this subversion of the trope is enough to make Chitose interesting. Because instead of using the first arc of the series to introduce us to the different layers of Chisote and his friend group, it strangely mostly focuses on a classmate that Chitose had nothing to do with before. And who is of course an introvert that gets "saved" by Chitose after not wanting to go to school anymore. And sure, I don't actually mind having an arc focused on a different person before we delve into the actual characters that matter (Chitose and his friend group), however the author fails to use this time to properly characterize all these people that will stay around.

And I think this is the first big failure of the show. All of the characters feel very similar to another. This is mostly shown by their interactions with each other. It doesn't matter if Chitose talks to girl A or B, the general conversation always goes the same. They are confident, make witty one-liners and in some way or another try to flirt with Chitose. Also, they easily get jealous whenever Chitose spent time with another girl even though they are not in a relationship with him. Sure, there are some differences, like how two of the girls are more sport types, but since the conversation rarely revolves around these topics, you would be excused for not knowing who Chitose talks to if you closed your eyes, because they are just this similar to one another. And that is even worse with Chitose's male friends who have literally 0 personality.

Now tbf, I have to backtrack a bit, because the characters seemingly do have a bit more depth than the conversations allude to. Which is shown by the second arc that revolves around Nanase. So basically, the show wants to slowly build up all these characters through their own individual arcs. But this just takes too much time and it makes the choice of having 4 whole episodes about a completely unimportant character even more baffling imo, because we could have spent the time with one more of Chitose's friends. But therein already lies the second issue, the characters are only actual characters when it's their arc. The show fails to properly utilize the large cast of characters. For example, the author could have used more of Chitose's friends during the Nanase arc and therefore already introduce who they are, but for some reason, they are so concentrated on Chitose being the "savior" that they forget that they have a cast of more than 7 characters to play with. The only reason you remember half of the characters is because the show will literally hold the current arc, so that Chitose can go on a "date" (with one or more of the girls at the same time) that never goes anywhere and only leads to the same conversations all the time. Which makes these moments feel like they mainly exist so that the audience doesn't forget that Chitose has a larger group of friends.

So, the main issue narratively is that the characters are not utilized very well. But okay, what about the actual arcs that they go through? As mentioned above, these can vary in quality as well. The first arc about the introvert is really not important at all and can easily be skipped. The second arc about Nanase and her stalker problem is a lot more interesting. And I will give the show that they managed to portray the fear that comes with something like this very well. But both of these also suffer from the same issue and that is Chitose. Who just always knows the right thing to do. Even when that is not the right thing in the first place. I don't want to go into details, but there are several moments in both of these arcs where Chitose takes an action that is really not that good in the current situation. And that would be fine if the show acknowledged it. But it doesn't do that. It portrays all of Chitose's actions as the right ones. He didn't do anything wrong. Which feels especially problematic during the stalker arc (where I feel the show tried to bite off more than it can chew, because the conclusion to that arc was messy at best when it comes to solutions for such a problem).

And the sad thing is, the show can be better than this, which the currently last arc shows us. Because without going into spoilers, it is an arc that doesn't just focus on the next girl, but also Chitose. He is not the perfect savior anymore, but acts emotional and therefore makes mistakes. It's the first time that the character of Chitose actually felt human. And therefore, I think it's so sad that the show didn't lead with that arc, because I feel a lot more people would have been on board with that. Tbf, that arc isn't concluded and will be focused on in the second season, so maybe I shouldn't give it too much praise already, but I will be honest and say that these last three episodes were what I was expecting going into the show. And I think it is a shame that the series is overshadowed by its really mediocre and sometimes even bad start.

However, this last arc can also not cover my last criticism and this is the dialogue. Now, I won't be saying here that anime has the most realistic dialogue. We all know that is not true (with a few exceptions). However, this show takes it to another level. Chitose in particular talks in a way (not just in monologue but sometimes even with other people) that just feels unnatural, because it is such a flowery language. Like how some person is like the sun, shining bright and illuminating everything and in contrast to that is the moon, who is always lonely and stuff like that. And don't get me wrong, I don't mind a line like that every once in a while. But in this show, it is constant and it makes all the characters (that as mentioned already have problems being characters) feel even more artificial, because this is just a step too far for me to feel believable. But of course, this might be something that others don't feel as bad about.

And that is why I can not fully recommend this show to everyone. It's definitely a mixed bag and if you can look past the issues (especially the way the dialogues and monologues are written), then I think you can have fun with it. It's one of the shows that yes, really gets better after episode 4, but still always has its problems here and there when it comes to how it addresses certain problems. However, I will also say that this newest arc that will be continued in season 2 is by far the best the series has to offer and depending how it is concluded can sway me more in a positive direction. If that is a enough of a promise for you, then try the show. But if you know that you will be too annoyed by the first two arcs that it will negatively affect this third arc, then it's probably best to skip it alltogether.

"Status: Finished Airing". Finally, now I can review it. And its going to be a long one, sorry and good luck (if you choose to continue).
Also, I'm reviewing its quality, not the enjoyment. I like a whole lot of bad (poor) media, its not something to be afraid of. But this review will be about its quality. Mostly. I'll will also drop some personal comments, because... well, you'll see. So.

*Me, after watching the first 1:30 min*: "This sht's so pretentious." And yet, I was about to give it a decent score, but then the last episodes happened.

Starting. Visuals. No surprises here. All is good, ... almost excellent (almost, because the models in some of the scenes were not that great). Nice art style, with extremely beautiful characters design, colour palette, animation, mannerism etc. You get the idea. You might even say that its a bit too artsy. More often than not the scenes will consist of still images that just stay unchanged (or its a slow panning shot of the evening sky or something) for 5-20 seconds, while some sort of dialogue runs in the background. Or between scenes. And so on, and so forth. Yes, those shots look freakishly amazing, each and every one could be an wallpaper. But sometimes art like that could be a problem, depending on the story.
Audio. Well, amazing (again) sound design. Excellent mixing, the tracks used were on par with the visuals unfolding and the volume was where it was supposed to be. I was never bothered by something like the music being too loud and messing up your delving into the scene. Every time I noticed the soundtrack it was because the dialogue was sht and my concentration was messed up. Anyway. The OP and ED are on par with this anime's feeling. Not my cup of tea but I still felt their vibe to be similar to the anime. Good VA work.
The pacing felt ok. Its hard to judge it because, for me, it felt too long because of the dialogue, but it did feel ok. Good mix and editing. I truly believe the studio did what it was supposed to. Anyway, high production value and you can feel it.

Now, the good parts. Well, the story is sht. Its all bait. More exactly, the harem aspect is the bait. Hmmm, how should I go about this? Its a bit hard explaining as to why its all fake, while also trying to be spoiler free. but try and follow my crazy thoughts, pls.
So. First and foremost, this anime should've remained a LN (I presume thats the sauce). Its style works better as words-only. As I mentioned earlier, the graphics are too good and are wasted here. Yes, we'd always want the best and here it even works flawlessly, but unfortunately the story/the dialogue is the weak link. Also, I wasn't joking with the opening quote. The style in which it is written, every fking monologue, it reminds me of the speech young Elrond was writing in the Rings of Power TV show (for those who had the "pleasure" to know it). Empty, cringy, flowery words. That kind of sht. Trying to be poetic. And yes, its not all bad, sure. We don't have the "do you know why the boats float and the stones sink?" level of idiocy (RoP, ep 1), here the author uses stuff like "the rain was falling like pieces of broken glass", or "the water drops sparkling in the last rays of the sun" (I think thats how it went, it was too cringe to remember), but also drops some "the blowing wind felt like trying to bring back the day before, or maybe trying to bring forth the day after. I didn't know. But the wind was still blowing" level of sht. And yes, its full of this kind of writing. It works for LN where you don't have visuals and the words will help paint the picture in your mind. It works for the pretentious people who like reading stuff that feels elegant, even if they will not understand exactly the meaning behind those words and if it makes any sense. And I'm not making fun of those people either. Everyone has their own kinks, want to feel that they belong in certain settings. I will never laugh at people for that! Forgive the tangent.
So. Being an unknown author with a niche audience is ok. Unfortunately he also got a nice bait. And its the reason why this work got so popular ( I presume so, seeing that it got an adaptation, and seeing the way he writes). The harem. Its not something new but it has something that it was done better. Every girl is more or less likable and could have a chance, no matter of her role in the group. You have the usual tropes (smart girl, sports girl, homey girl etc) and most of the times the author has a bias towards a girl from the start. You can "feel" that the childhood friend won't get the girl, or on contrary, that the bond is really solid. Not here though. The author interweaved the narratives perfectly. How? By checking what the people might prefer and changing the story every time, to keep them all in balance. Remember George RR Martin? "Oh, you like this character? It feels like he'll become someone? Off with his head then!". Same here. "Is one girl pulling ahead? Lets rein her in a bit, let the audience wonder and keep reading (or watching, in this case)". And most people were too du-- hooked too see it and in fact even loved that aspect. Case in point, the sauce got an adaptation.
Ok, you might be a little bewildered and ask "I only heard good reasoning. Why the fk is that a bad thing?" Well, because the character work is sht. The logic aspect is sht. Basically, to keep the girls in check, for the events to follow a particular line of thought, the author went the "because I'm the author and I say so" route. "We need to get from A to B. How do we do that?" Some crazy, stupid, nonsensical event happens and voila! AKA plot device. Sometimes, depending on the idiocy's level, it might also give birth to a plot contrivance or plot hole. Fictional example. The ML takes a detour because he felt like it. Suddenly, he comes across one of the FL that was in a pickle. Plot device. The FL also took a detour, for no reason. Plot contrivance. Aka "it just so happened, eh?". If the FL left earlier and she never went that way because thats where she was raped 1 year ago (damn, this took a dark turn huh), thats a plot hole, because the author forgot that fact. Pretty easy. Now back to our anime. So what happens when reasons appear for events to occur? Sometimes in the form of "hey, you. Help me for a bit", sometimes MC changing his rationale and way of thinking/acting, facts properly explained across multiple episodes? Hmm? Even more so when his previous acts were the result of something very specific and ingrained...

*sigh* I'm starting to feel annoyed again. I'll try to speed it up a little, to end it faster. Character development. There is some, with more to come, I'm sure. The characters are generally lovable. Having said that, as previously mentioned, in order to make the events happen and keep the levels of affection for the girls in check, someone had to start acting uncharacteristically. And guess who will that be? The ML, ofc. Oh, I should also mention in this section that his friends are not just friend A and Friend B. It is implied that there's more to them that meets the eye, so probably future developments are in place. Not that I'd care, but it was worth mentioning it.
Oh, Oh. I just remembered an aspect and I'll place it here, I don't wanna go back and check where it should've been. Its about the second bait. The author gives you hints about stuff happening or future happenings, but disguised as "you so smart, only a few of my readers are smart enough to connect the dots. Shh, it will be our little secret". So, he tricks the people into thinking that there is a secret path ahead and only the worthy ones will be able to peak at who will win in the end. Ok, its not exactly like that but yeah, I hate that guy and his shitty tricks just to keep the people hooked, without even a good story.
Back to the main program. Yes, character development. Dammit, I forgot what I was going to say next...... Oh, yes, the MC. Still. The fking loser is portrayed as a great philosopher, full a grand thoughts and ideas about life, and love, and the meaning of stuff and comes up with ret***ed reasons as to what something means and how it is supposed to happen, be it his own thoughts or not. "Love becomes love when blah blah", "ah, she thinks this and that because this and that". Oh, right. Would you know it? Different people have the same line of thought in regards of the philosophical stuff. Its almost like they are all modeled after their creator's mind.... Fkin' loser... Yeah, I can't, lets end it.

Quick, the comedy is good. But also sometimes kinda cringy. That way of 2-man routine thats popular in JP, it still feels weird to me. And even weirder is the fact that any 2 persons can quickly fall in step and reply in the "perfect way". But it did made me chuckle a whole lot of times.
Next, I don't know what happened, whats with that airing program, if the high reception made it that it got a new season/cour and they speeded up and changed the ending or if that was always in the books. Regardless, the last 3 episodes are pure sht. Rolling my eyes almost every time those two characters kept talking. Oh, speaking of, here is as good as any. So, the first arc is somewhat ok. We find out about stuff. World building, expo dump to help us learn about the characters etc. The story is meh but you'll get over it. The 2nd arc looks more promising. Even if the way it started and the way the author let you "guess by yourself" who and what were a bit of a let down. But you get the feeling that it is, finally, a romance anime. You also learn that the ML is a loser, with weird definitions for love and what it means and does. Even though he also has personal convictions that should bypass that cretin love definition... Anyway. Then the last 3 episodes aired. And the sht hit the fan. Drama all around, people acting in ways to force the narrative on certain path. All under the disguise of philosophical ideas, ofc. Cheap words mixed with genuine ideas, to give validity to any concept sputtered by the characters (read as "the author's personal beliefs"). *sigh*

So. Its an anime about youth, supposedly. About love and life. Youngsters that keep going about life more intensely than some 2.000 old dead greek. The ladies are nice, the MC was nice in the beginning. Everything had nice chemistry. As a bonus, everything also looked and sounded good. You can even look past the flowery dialogue, you can somewhat follow the story. But cracks keep appearing and at some point you will see whats behind. It is basically a love story with the author at its center. The MC keeps drooping lines like "maybe I'll become a novelist and we'll meet again", "if you get rejected, cry for a day, write a poem, then make it a song", "I hope this day to be something the old me will remember with a smile". *sigh* I dunno if he got b*tthurt, if he got rejected, if he had to choose or whatever. I don't even care if its all real or he never got the guts to confess, or even if its his own story. But the result is the same. Its a sh***y story. If this would've been a "normal" harem romance anime, it would've easily been a good one, no matter who the main (or solo, or even all equally) pick was. But as it stands, this way of writing, trying to bait and keep the story going just for the sake of fame, with no regard for the time the readers/viewers will invest into the story and without a certainty that it will have a satisfying end, well, it rubs me the wrong way. And by "satisfying ending" I don't mean the girls will be paired with different guys, one by one, and for the author to go "See? Everyone's happy. That was the plan all along". So, kindly, go fk yourself with your baiting way of writing.

It gets a rating of 6. Almost amazing work from the studio. Oh, I never mentioned this. At some point a girl exits a room and while she is doing that, her hand is "sensually" caressing the wall for 1 extra second. Or something like that. Its a simple act, it has no real meaning. But it felt really natural and the animation was extremely well made that it left an impression, as you can see. Episode 8? 9? Also in the same episode, she walks towards the MC and her model's profile is not the greatest, so I know the visuals were not perfect, but still. Moving on. Decent (or even very nice) personalities and character development. Decent/good/very good comedy & banter scenes, even if sometimes it feels a bit forced. "Lovable" romantic scenes. Having said that, because it does not inspire a lot of faith to have a decent ending, I cannot in good conscience recommend this anime. I this is one of those titles that you must check for yourself. Btw, there are 2,5 arcs, none the same, so you can't watch the first few episodes and think "I can work with that". Be warned :)))
If you really really wanna check it out, just watch until you feel it gets too dumb for you. Or check the sauce, maybe it has more chapters and you can get a better view as to what is to pass ( I didn't and will not, so I can't help you here. But I do have faith in my instinct). Or even better, just re-watch/ read again a title you already know that it is good/ you like :))))) Enjoyment factor? Again, I don't know. Some funny scenes, some lovely romance (what can pass as one at least), but I really hated that narration, so my enjoyment was rather low. Return value? None for me. Not even for one or two characters. Episode 13 ends with a title card for the next episode, so 2nd cour is on the way. I haven't checked yet the titles for spring so I don't know if its there already, or when its supposed to appear. But I do know that I will not rewatch this season/cour to familiarise myself with what previously happened. (Because I have a feeling that my brain will try and flush this sh content).
